Speakers and Schedule Not Yet Complete

Author:

standinline I wanted to take a moment and bring everyone up to date on where we stand with the schedule and the speakers lineup.  We are completing most of the 11 separate tracks that will be going on at Blog World Expo in October.  Panels such as the military bloggers have already been completed by their track leaders as well as the medical bloggers,  and those are being posted on blogs.  Other tracks such as the Social Media Business Summit and others have yet to be completed.  These are taking more time to develop. We are in the process of filling those positions by interviewing those that have submitted proposals and are vying for the very few spots left. Most of the track leaders have completed their tracks and we are firming up some information before the schedule is set.

Imagine if you will that we have two job openings for cool positions.  Now imagine 2,000 standing in line to interview for the positions.  You can get a sense of what we are trying to accomplish here.  I need to first speak to those that we want to provide the stage to and then make a decision based on the interviews.  That all takes much time and effort and we are trying to get through them as quickly as possible.  I appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.  Those that have already been chosen to speak will be getting an email soon with more information on the time of your panel and the information related to that panel.

I have to apologize that this is taking much longer than I myself anticipated. If you are one of the people standing in line, I am getting there, I just need to find another few moments in the day!

Here Are My Heroes…. Who Is Your Hero?

Author:

A few days ago a dear friend introduced me to a group of very special people and a wonderful organization; The Bob Woodruff FoundationStephanie asked if we could help them spread the word for their TweettoRemind campaign and their goal to raise $1.65m by Memorial Day. We of course said yes!

What is Tweet to Remind?

Here is Bob in his own words:

After I was severely injured while reporting on location in Iraq, my family and I realized we had a unique opportunity to reach out and help many of our nation’s injured heroes. In January 2008, my wife Lee and I started ReMIND.org, an organization dedicated to raising money and awareness for service members injured in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as their families. Our current project is the TweetToRemind campaign, which asks individuals and corporations to donate $5.25 or more in an effort to raise $1.65 million by the end of the Memorial Day weekend.

Please read the whole thing, join the campaign and let us know who your heroes are and give what you can to support this worthy cause.  It will certainly make you a hero in my eyes.

As for my heroes I have a lot of them starting with my Mom. After adopting my sister and I when we were babies she sacrificed quite a bit to give us the best life we could ever hope for.

All the men and women serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard and Coast Guard are heroes to me. The amazing volunteers at Soldiers Angels, Fisher House and Semper Fi Fund who lead by example and show all of use civilians how we can do our part.

But today thanks to BlackFive I have some new heroes. Their names are Rachel Pertile and her son Evan. Two days before Thanksgiving in 2008 Rachel tried to annonymously pay the bill for a group of soldiers eating their lunch at a local restaurant. The soldiers found out what she had done and thanked her before she could leave.  Three days later Evan was diagnosed with brain cancer. More on this story from BlackFive:

Evan, now 6 years old, has had two neurosurgeries, radiation and is now having chemotherapy. All of his treatments have been at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. In January, Pertile was on a flight making her way from Memphis back to her home in Colombia when she broke down in tears.

“It was the first time I had gone home since we had ,come to St. Jude’s and we have three other boys and I really wanted to go home and spend some time there,” Pertile said. “But I was really sad to leave Evan because he had just started losing his hair in chunks.”

Sitting next to Pertile on the flight was Brenda Bowen, who works in Classroom Services at the Command and General Staff College. Bowen offered Pertile an ear and a shoulder, and when she found out Evan’s affinity for “Army guys,” she knew there was something she could do to help.

“She told me about her son and how he loves Soldiers, and I thought ‘I bet I can get a few Soldiers to send him messages,'” Bowen said.

After the flight, Bowen contacted Col. Bob Burns, the director of the Center for Army Tactics at CGSC.

“We start getting faculty and the students to send notes to the boy,” Burns said.

Evan has a page at caringbridge.org, a Web site for people to connect with loved ones and others during a critical illness.

“There were a significant number of messages that got posted,” Burns said. “And then it kind of grows like these things do, and guys in Iraq start sending notes.”

What Evan began doing next surprised everyone. Pertile said Evan had been receiving messages on his Web page saying he needed to eat to be Army strong and that Army Rangers have to eat to be strong.

“He started eating – he had completely quit eating and he was like ‘I gotta eat,'” Pertile said. “It was remarkable, it was just incredible, like this unseen force helping my child – the generosity of others.”

In addition to the messages on the Web site, Evan has received his own set of ACUs, a beret and a certificate designating him as an honorary Soldier.

Pertile said she welcomes posts to her son’s Web site http://caringbridge.org/visit/evanpertile. To register, enter an e-mail address and create a password.

Please go read the whole thing at BlackFive.  This story is chock full of heroes that we should all try to emulate.

Who are your heroes?

Why did we create BlogWorld & New Media Expo?

Author:

Lots of people have asked me that question and I read a post today at the Demystifying Digital Blog titled Blogging Comes of Age for Capitalists – Blog Trade Show. I don’t think this self proclaimed digitial grandmother meant any insult in her last two paragraphs but I felt compelled to address them.

I was almost thrown back to my hippy incarnation of the the ’70s (ok, the 60s), rallying and stomping and hooting in favor of something cool. Something hip. But, as with everything that makes money, and the blogosphere has made gazillions for a fortunate few, the big guys get their foot in the door, their fingers in the pie. If people have found ways to profit from 9/11, they can profit from anything. But that’s how it is with the people. We are capitalists. Entrepreneurs at heart. We like money. Therefore, as it was meant to happen, organizers and vendors exploit the blogosphere. In fact, in Las Vegas (!) this fall, there’s to be a Blogworld and New Media Expo. A tradeshow. The folks in who-knows-what outlandish leisure garb, dashing off blog entries from dining room tables across the American outback, are invited to gather in Vegas and learn what’s what in the ‘sphere. If you hurry you still have time to start up your own blog and make it out to Vegas.

I found blogs just after September 11th 2001. Milblogs like Mudville Gazette, Blackfive, and Michael Yon were and still are regular reads for me. In fact after years of leaving lengthy comments and having great debates on many political blogs left right and center I finally got motivated enough to create my own blog therealuglyamerican.com and started posting.
One day I emailed one of those milbloggers and asked him for an interview via email. His name was Tim Boggs. Tim agreed to the interview. I have interviewed other soldiers and Iraqi journalists and bloggers 24 Steps to Liberty and Treasure of Baghdad. Later I put two of my friends 24 steps and Tim together to ask each other questions.

To make a long story short, I was dedicated to my blog and proud of what I had accomplished. I didn’t launch BlogWorld to get rich. I wanted to attend an event like this to meet with my blogger friends, peers and industry icons. I wanted to learn how to blog better, build my readership and yes maybe make some money from this hobby I was spending several hours a day on.  Yes we hope to make money on BlogWorld someday but we certainly wont this year.
Yes there are companies who make money from blogging, lots of them like Google (I started on blogspot), Yahoo (I use MyblogLog everyday), Six Apart (many of my favorite bloggers use Moveable Type), Podango (ever heard of Twit TV?) and Technorati (who hasn’t checked their ranking or used their search?) . Thank goodness for all of them and thousands of other like them. Without them we wouldn’t have the wonderful publishing and broadcasting tools we do today. There would be no blogging or podcasting without them.
I am proud to say Military.com is a sponsor of our event and they will host a track on milblogging at BlogWorld. Matt and Uncle Jimbo from Blackfive will be there. I am proud to say Tim Boggs and I have remained friends since he as returned home and he will be an honored guest at BlogWorld. I am proud to say Michael Yon will (technology and God willing) address BlogWorld attendees via live video feed from Iraq. I am proud to say the amazing ladies from Soldiers Angels will be there. I hope you all take the time to thank them for their service and what they do.

There will be lots of other communities represented, attractions and reasons to attend but this one is particularly special for me.  I hope the Digital Grandparent and her readers will join me and thousands of other bloggers to celebrate what we have created and achieved. I hope she realizes this is about far more important things than money.

Pentagon Bans Army Milblogs!

Author:

See the story here:

Tim here filling in for Rick who is on the road. To introduce myself I am a milblogger and am somewhat shocked at the what the Pentagon has just done. I say somewhat because there is a part of me that is never surprised by anything the military does. What shocks me the most about the situation is that the Pentagon is going in the opposite direction of where we need to go right now. Let me explain.

The world over knows that our enemy (terrorists will suffice) will never be able to beat us on the battlefield. Heck the terrorists even know that. So what do they do? They beat us with propaganda. ‘Terrorists’ are masterminds at using the media to further their cause, and we (USA), seem hell bent on doing all that we can to lose the war on that front. If we can’t convince people in America that that the war on ‘terror’ is the right thing to do, then we will never be able to garner the support needed in order to win on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan.

So what does my theory have to do with the fact that the Pentagon has banned Milblogs? Well during my time blogging while deployed to Iraq I was able to give a real picture of what life was like on the ground. I received countless emails from people the world over thanking me for telling it like it really was. Most people have a strong desire to understand what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan and one of the main sources (up until now) where they got their information was from soldiers like myself. Now that the Pentagon has changed that everyone will once again have to rely upon the MSM for their “news”. So go ahead and voice your opinion if you think soldiers should be given the right to tell the world what is really going on. Believe you me, if the world really knew what it was like on the ground in Iraq they would be behind us 100 percent.

Be sure to check out the Milblog Conference.
