Protect Your Favorite Podcast from the Patent Trolls

Author:

There are often very good reasons people and companies must defend their patents. The Patent system protects inventors. When a patent is infringed on, the holder must take action or risk losing their patent. That is how it works when the system is being used properly. Patent Trolls are not using the system as it was designed.

Patent trolls are not in the business of defending their patents. They are in the business of extortion. They purchase broad general patents and then make claims about infringement. They send out letters claiming a patent infringement and asking for “licensing” fees. It is nearly always cheaper to pay the fee than to fight it in court. Often these patent infringement claims would not likely hold up in court but few businesses are able to fund the 1.5 + million it would take to survive a legal battle.  Even Apple gave in and settled

For us non legal folks, that’s known as a shake down.

  CAROLLA_728x90

In 2013 one of these trolls sent letters to several leading podcasters such as HowStuffWorks podcast (Discovery Channel), Marc Maron, Chris Hardwick, Adam Carolla  and more. They claim that a patent for their failed “Magazines on tape” Continue Reading

Five ways to tell a visually compelling story online (Sponsored Post)

Author:

SNAG_Program-0665 In today’s digitally focused world, it can be hard to break through all of the clutter. This makes it increasingly important to stay on top of trends. As part of the Army Marketing and Research Group, we constantly think about how we can bring our target audience the information they seek, in the best possible way. As we look to where digital and social media will go in the next few years, one thing is for sure – visual storytelling is imperative for getting your message across online.

Below are five ways you can tell a visually compelling story online that will help you reach and engage with your audience:

1. Think Mobile First
For the first time in history, people are now using the internet more through their mobile devices than through their desktop computers (Business Insider). And with more than 61 percent of mobile phone users in the United States using smartphones (Nielsen), adapting your site(s) for mobile consumption ensures a seamless user experience regardless of device and allows for more interaction online.

2. Develop a Web Content Series
Web content series are a medium still growing in popularity and open to a broad array of multimedia. The Starting Strong program is an original content series that follows young men and women as they are immersed in the U.S. Army experience for three days, ultimately making the decision on whether or not to enlist. A fully integrated marketing approach is key to not only driving viewers to watch the content, but also to keep them engaged with your digital properties.

3. Multimedia Blogging
Now more than ever it is important to include video and photo elements in traditional text blog posts to keep your audience interested and engaged. More and more, photos, videos and GIFs are driving the bulk of online engagement as you look at sites that have achieved mass popularity. Consider embeddable videos, compelling photo visuals and other free tools to easily engage your audience online.

4. Infographics
Data is important. But most times, data can be hard to digest. Infographics can add valuable context to existing stories by using visuals to represent numbers, relationships and facts that might otherwise be overlooked. For example, our signature Soldier blog, ArmyStrongStories.com, houses an incredible amount of information such as how many Soldiers contribute to the site, which countries they’ve posted blogs from and how many comments their blog posts receive. An easy way for the Army to package this information is through a robust infographic that tells our blogging story in a visually appealing way.

5. Include Paid Social to Support Your Content Syndication Program
This year, widely used social networks, namely Facebook and Twitter, made design and layout changes based on imagery. In addition, the fast adoption of Instagram, Pinterest and Vine shows just how important visual storytelling is in social media marketing strategies. Using quality visual content, as well as allocating spend to paid social, are growing in importance to reach your core audience.

Rob Greenlee Announced As New CTO At PodcastOne

Author:

Longtime Podcasting veteran and pioneer Rob Greenlee was announced as the new CTO for PodcastOne this morning.  Rob has been a long time friend of and speaker at New Media Expo.

We see this is a significant move for PodcastOne just three short weeks away from CEO Norm Pattiz’s blockbuster keynote on The Future of Podcasting at #NMX.  Rob will be reporting directly to CEO Norm Pattiz who had this to say about the hire:

“No one knows more about podcasts than Rob Greenlee. Having him join our company is a huge boost to our brand, the credibility of the company and the future growth of the platform. We’re all very excited about adding Rob to the executive team at PodcastOne.“

Rob Greenlee has spent the last seven years overseeing the video and audio podcasts platform at Xbox Live, Windows Phone, and Zune as well as managing the business, content partner relations, around the podcasts platform service for Microsoft.

Rob Greenlee

Here is his quote from the official press release:

“I am excited to be joining PodcastOne and being offered the opportunity to help Norm and the  PodcastOne team build a great online entertainment brand that gives much value to audiences and advertisers, I see Norm Pattiz and PodcastOne’s entry into this space as a key catalyst to the recognition and respect this 10 year old medium deserves.”

During his keynote with Leo Laporte, and Stitcher CEO Noah Shanok, the PodcastOne founder threw out several tweetable comments that NMX attendees jumped on. A few examples include this tweet from Jane Boyd:

Radio should be afraid of staying the course. #nmx opening comment from morning keynote on the future of podcasting.

This from Holland Cooke:

@PodcastOne founder Norm Pattiz at #NMX:If I were Howard Stern, I would go to a subscription #podcasting model. Emulate #GlennBeck model.

And they really loved his shoes:

Great shoes Norman Pattiz @PodcastOne #NMX #nmxfashion pic.twitter.com/WiZN4u781g

The overall theme of Mr. Pattiz’s take on the future of podcasting was summerized in this comment tweeted by Justin Wise:

“We’re not worried about what the podcast industry has been, we’re focused on what it’s going to be.” – Norm Pattiz #NMX

PodcastOne’s hiring of Rob Greenlee today is evidence that they are indeed looking to the future of podcasting.

Author:
In 1994 I wrote a script for a twenty eight minute video. To produce the video it cost me $10,000. The video generated over $120,000,000.00 in revenue. Yes, that’s millions. Approximately 20% of that went directly into my pocket.
If you are a writer, blogger, podcaster or producer you need to read this article. If you haven’t figured it out already, I wrote an infomercial. Before you scoff, before you dismiss me and skip this article let me ask you a question. If you knew that people would pay you based on their level of enjoyment of your content would you survive the cut? The more they liked you the more they paid. The less they liked you to less they paid. What if they hated you and you had to pay them? That is the cold, hard truth of how the world really functions.I must admit, I have a very unfair advantage. I am a hypnotist. Not just any hypnotist. The media calls me the greatest hypnotist of all time. I know how the mind operates and I know what causes a person to do what they do. I not only hypnotized my wife to fall in love with me I also hypnotized her to give drugless, painless birth to our two sons at home in the bath tub with no doctors present. When I write copy I hypnotize people to buy my products and when I speak I hypnotize people to run to the back of the room to invest in themselves and my programs.I am very up front and honest about it. My wife will tell you she knew I hypnotized her from the moment we met. She will tell you she’s glad I did. My fans and customers keep coming back for more because their lives have been made better by what I hypnotized them to buy. I hypnotize my son’s on a daily basis to adjust their behaviors so they can live a more full and joyful life. Everybody wins.

Media, whether terrestrial or digital is one of the most hypnotic forms of communication on the planet. With so many choices in media both online and off, it’s essential that you structure your content in a way that not only keeps your audience engaged it also must cause them to take a new action. Whether it’s buying your products or visiting your advertisers sites, or taking some new action.

When I created my infomercial “Passion, Profit and Power!” I knew that I wasn’t only competing with other infomercials. I knew I was competing with all other TV programming. I knew I was competing with print, radio, board games, and any other activity my consumer could choose. You see, the human condition is such that it will always choose the path of least resistance. That’s how people form habits that they know are horrible and still have such a hard time stopping.

All buying decisions are based first on emotion and then backed up with logic. A buying decision isn’t just the choice to make a purchase. A buying decision is any choice. Choosing to subscribe to your blog, choosing to recommend you to friends, choosing to come back again and again are all buying decisions.

If you adhere to a simple formula, you will dramatically increase both your audience and your revenue.

I described this formula during the NMX Hangout with CoachDeb. Watch this now:

I call the formula “E3”. Entertain, Educate, Empower.First Entertain. Funny means money. The highest paid television and movie actors are always comics. Laughter and the joy it brings are highly desirable experiences for most healthy people. When you can make someone laugh you will hold their attention. At the same time any emotional experience will engage people and keep them engaged since human beings are motion junkies. In my infomercial I showed clips of people walking on broken glass, breaking bricks with their bare hands, eating fire and getting hypnotized to do the most amazing things. I knew if I created a show that they would come back and watch again and again eventually they would buy from me.Second Educate. To be an authority you must establish competence. Give your audience useful knowledge that they can not only use, give them information that firmly positions you as an expert. If you don’t believe that your material is content rich enough, come see me, there’s a hypnotist for that.Thirdly Empower. If they are simply entertained and don’t take a new action then you are missing the mark. To create evangelical customers, fans and followers you must alter, add to and improve the quality of their lives. What’s the outcome? What’s the new habit or action? Did you empower them to change their lives, buy your product or spread your message to others? If so, grand slam, out of the park, home run.

I will be entertaining at NMX LIVE! on Saturday night at 8pm. My hypnotic show will have you laughing until you hurt and gasping in amazement. On Sunday at 4:30pm I will be keynoting and teaching you how to massively monetize your online content and more. Plus I am going to be giving away tens of thousands of dollars in cash and prizes. See you at NMX LIVE!

There is a myth in the online space about lucky people that become an “overnight success” out of nowhere. It’s bunk. Or more specifically, an iceberg.

However you look at it, it takes a lot more than showing up to the party to achieve success. Lynette Young has been a technology and marketing professional for 25 years, one of the earliest bloggers and podcasters, and now a huge Google+ fan. Find out how it took her so long to become an “overnight success” – including how to dig deep and find your own version of instant stardom.

Make sure to add Lynette’s keynote to your Sched schedule to let others know you’ll be in the audience.

lee odden Following Lynette, Lee Odden will take the stage to present “Blogs to Riches: 10 Lessons Learned from 10 Years of Blogging.”

In the process of writing 2,600 blog posts and over a million words over 10 years, Lee has learned numerous lessons about where blogging fits in a digital marketing and PR mix. For Lee and his boutique digital marketing agency, blogging has lead to a successful, growing business that includes a social network community of over 300,000, a book deal, mentions by WSJ, NY Times, The Economist, speaking engagements all over the world, consulting engagements with large companies and major brands like McKesson, Dell, HP, General Mills and LinkedIn as well as media partnerships with major marketing conferences.

In his keynote presentation at NMX, Lee will share key lessons that any business can use, on how he and a very small team have been able to leverage smart, creative and results focused blogging to earn huge returns on their efforts – from blogs to riches.

Lee’s keynote can be added to your Sched schedule as well by clicking here.

Super Session Spotlight: 5 Elements of a Powerful, Personal Brand

Author:

Michael Hyatt At NMX 2014, we’ll be presenting several Super Sessions, which are longer and more in-depth sessions to kick off our Blogging, Podcasting, Web TV, and Business Tracks every day. Today’s Super Session Spotlight is all about Michael Hyatt, who will be presenting “5 Elements of a Powerful, Personal Brand” in the Podcasting Track on Day One.

Michael Hyatt is the author of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World. His blog also helps thousands of people learn to become better leaders through leveraging their influence. So, who better than Michael to speak about developing your personal brand?

We’re excited to be welcoming Michael to the stage at NMX to present the Super Session “5 Elements of a Powerful, Personal Brand.” Get your ticket to the show here if you haven’t already!

Michael’s Super Session is one of the smartest time investments you can make at NMX 2014 if you’re interested in building your brand. Don’t just take my word for it! Here are some of Michael’s posts on this topic so you can get a feel for yourself about what to expect at this Super Session:

I also want to encourage you to check out this podcast episode with Michael (and one of our other awesome speakers, Chris Ducker) about the topic of personal branding. And of course, definitely check out Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, Michael’s latest book.

Why are we bringing Michael back to the NMX stage?

1. He does it all.

We’re a conference about blogging, podcasting, web TV/video, and social business. Michael is a master of all four. He writes a wildly successful blog, releases a new podcast episode every Wednesday (in addition to being a guest on others’ podcasts), records video interviews with experts like Guy Kawasaki, and is former Chairman and CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers, the seventh largest trade book publishing company in the U.S. Is there anything this guy doesn’t do?

2. He made the transition from old to new.

Our conference is all about new media, with respect to older media like traditional publishing. Unfortunately, it can sometimes be like pulling teeth to convince people in traditional media that Twitter, podcasting, and other online activities have merit. Michael has traditional publishing routes, yet fully embraces new media, and we love that about him.

3. You’re going to walk away feeling inspired – and with awesome tips you can put into effect immediately.

Motivation is important, but at NMX, we always strive to give you speakers who will not only inspire, but also give you actionable tips to implement. Michael delivers on both fronts. You can expect to walk away from his Super Session feeling motivated to make position changes and with sound advice on how to make those changes happen.

Will you be in the audience for Michael’s talk at NMX? If you don’t already have a ticket, make sure to secure your seat here! Michael will also be talking later in the conference on a Podcasting Track panel, so if you come to the show, you have the opportunity to hear him speaker twice. Hope to see you there!
