An Open Letter To All From Blogs With Balls and HHR Media

Author:

To the illustrious attendees of Blogs With Balls 2.0:

We at HHR Media felt that by Tuesday, your BwB 2.0 hangover and double-vision would be mostly gone, and those of you (of which there were a few) who missed plane flights as a result of your excessive “conventioneering” shall we say, are home safe and sound.   We owe you a lot of thanking.  We tried to do it as much as possible in person, but there were a few of you who we missed and we want to make sure you are all aware at how grateful we were to have you in Vegas.  Each of you being there mattered to everyone else who attended, and that’s what makes things like BwB great.  That and free drinks of course.  Those never hurt.

We only have two requests of you to ensure that BwB remains a great experience for future attendees and sponsors:

  • We ask that you publicly thank our sponsorsPlease include in your BwB coverage a line and link to say thanks for making it possible. If you would like to send them an email as well, that goes a long way, so let us know and we will furnish you the right contact (though some of you already have Captain Morgan’s address). They want to know they were seen and heard, which in return makes them likely to get more involved as well as make the next event possible.   We are not asking you to schill for them or their point of view, but it can’t be said enough that our sponsors – FoxSports.com, Yardbarker.com, ESPN.com, SB Nation, Sports Illustrated, Diageo Liquors and CarbonPoker all clearly demonstrated that they felt you all being in the same place was good for sports media, and that they want to be associated with you and your work.

(A special thanks as well to Dan Levy for all his work on the Shootout;  our videographers and photographers, Ben from Berylium Pictures and Rob from Kabimba Media;  and the guys at Wondershot for their work on the intro video;  and, of course, our panelists.  Each of these individuals contributed their time and talent to make the event a success, and deserve our thanks.  Further, please keep them in mind if you are ever in need of said talents).

  • We also ask you to tell US about your experience.  Either via blog post or email, but please do not hold back.  We want to make the next one better (without going to the moon, Josh), but it will only be as good as your feedback.  So tell us what worked, what didn’t, and most importantly WHY. While this was a wildly different set-up than the first BwB, that doesn’t mean we can’t keep the best parts of it.  Also please consider sending along a one or two sentence wrap-up that we could use for future Blogs With Balls promotion.  Something that you would not mind being publicly attributed to you and your site.  Maybe why BwB is important to you as a blogger, or what it is that you get from the experience, or why you have come to two in a row.  We will let you know when/how we plan to use it, but it is much easier getting it now while it is still fresh than asking you for it in the lead up to the next one.

For your convenience, you can use this form for feedback: http://blogswithballs.com/2/feedback/

Finally, lots of our videos and pictures will be trickling out this week, and in full force next week.  We will send those out to all of you and point you to where they are hosted so you can use and share as you like – so definitely send us your pictures.  Thanks to those of you who already have pics and vids up!

-Don, Kyle, and Chris.

Guest Post BlogWorld Alum Scott Monty Ford Motor Company

Author:

Has it been just over a year since the last Blog World Expo? I vividly remember attending that one – I saw colleagues, friends and made new acquaintances, sharing knowledge and learning some exciting new things. And what an amazing and wild year it’s been in the time since.

In September 2008, I was still getting my feet wet at Ford Motor Company – having been there all of two months. There was a lot to learn and a lot to do, and as we embarked on setting our social media strategy, we had to remain aware of and active in the social space. I like to say that we subscribe to the Woody Allen philosophy of social media: “Ninety percent of social media is just showing up.”

We also believe in the Yogi Berra corollary to that: “It’s the other 50 percent that’s hard.”

So just how does a Fortune 10 company go about embarking on such a journey, and how has Ford been able to turn the ship so deftly? Well, I’m not gonna give all of that away here – you have to come to my keynote to hear the Full Monty. 🙂

But what I will tell you is that we couldn’t have done it without two very key elements – elements that make a huge difference in the success of our social media efforts:

1)      Great leadership: through our CEO Alan Mulally (who joined the company in September 2006) and his dynamic executive team, we have a solid business plan that’s putting the company right.

2)      Great products: having strong leadership and a plan means we have the ability to execute on that plan, and that means creating first-class products on a global scale. Vehicles that people want and value with a level of quality unsurpassed by even Toyota and Honda. The proof is in seeing them up close – which is why we’ll have some at the show for you to drive or sit in.

With that in place, our progress and success in the social media space has been that much easier to accomplish. But there’s also another secret ingredient here as well – one that may not come from hiring talent or investing in design and R&D.

Passion.

From the very first time I walked through the doors of Ford’s world headquarters in Dearborn, I was struck by the amazing passion that was apparent in every single person I’ve met at Ford. And that continues to this day. We all want this company to succeed, and we’re committed to making it happen.

When you have internal evangelists like that, it’s not a stretch to think that there are some like that on the outside as well. And that’s a big part of where we’re going with social media.

I look forward to sharing more of The Ford Story with you on October 15 in Las Vegas. Until then, remember: whatever happens in Vegas stays on Google.

Too Much Conference Swag? Time to Get Charitable!

Author:
If you're not wearing shirts you receive at conferences, consider donating to the needy.

If you're not wearing shirts you receive at conferences, consider donating to the needy.

Do you have to pack an extra tote bag in your luggage so you can carry home all your conference swag? If so, what happens to the swag when you get home? Be honest, now. Do you use half the stuff you grab from sponsors? Do you help yourself to hotel shampoos and soaps only to throw these goodies into a draw for “just in case?”.  Not to lecture, but to take stuff you’re never going to use only leads to more clutter and landfill. Moreover, there are some people who can put certain swaggy items to good use. Before accepting an item from a sponsor or vendor, consider whether or not this is something you’re really going to use. If you have a lot of conference swag you don’t know what to do with, consider getting charitble. There are plenty of people who can really use your swag.

Check it out:

  • Hotel toiletries: Donate to local homeless, senior citizen homes and battered women’s shelters. They’ll all put shampoos, sewing kits, soaps and cotton balls to very good use.
  • Clothing items: Donate to the homeless or needy.
  • Books, CDs and magazines: Donate to the library.
  • Toys: Really, do you use that gel yoyo? Donate it to Toys for Tots or a homeless shelter.
  • Business & stationery items: Donate to homeless shelters, schools and occupational learning centers.
  • Tote Bags: Use for your grocery shopping or donate to shelters.
  • Food and grocery items: Donate to the homeless shelter or food kitchen.

What do you do with YOUR conference swag?

Your Help With Next Year Requested

Author:

The major goal of the milblog track at Blog World is to talk with you. Not to you, not at you, not about you, but with you. We want to meet you, get to know you, and have you get to know us as well.

To that end, we will have an unofficial panel Friday 16 October at 1 pm (1300 hours) at the Army Milblog Lounge in the exhibit hall. That panel has but one purpose: to hear from you what you would like to see and/or hear in the milblog track next year.

So, what would you like to hear? What would you like to see?

Come by and let us know. Talk, enjoy some refreshments, and let’s begin planning on making next year even bigger and better than this year.

Hope to see you there.
