NMX Speaker Spotlight: 5 With Questions Cecily Kellogg

Author:
Cecily Kellogg

Cecily Kellogg

This isn’t Cecily Kellogg’s first rodeo at NMX speaker. In 2011, Cecily was a panelist at BlogWorld Los Angeles. Since then, she’s moved on from parent blogging to build a successful career as content marketer, which is what she’ll be talking about at NMX ’15 in April.

Behold today’s speaker spotlight.

5 Questions with Cecily Kellogg

1. Without repeating your online bio word for word, tell the NMX community who you are and why you're so good at what you do.

It wouldn’t seem like a poet would end up in content marketing, but that’s what happened to me. It turns out my years as a poet were great training for content creation. I learned how to say a lot with just a few words, a skill that has helped me craft content that people actually read. After achieving a small measure of success with my personal blog I became a full time writer in 2007, and today I run a small agency that provides marketing and written content to a variety of clients.

2. What are you speaking about at NMX? Why is this an important topic?

At NMX I’ll be talking about creating a content marketing strategy for your blog. Businesses are required to establish specific goals for their content.  The determine what a conversion will be, they use old school sales techniques, and they require content to produce results. Bloggers can benefit from this same approach, even if a “conversion” for them is something as simple as leaving a comment or sharing a post. I’ll be teaching bloggers how to integrate a business-style content strategy to grow their blog and help them find success – while staying true to their blog’s heart.

3. Who are you most looking forward to see speak at NMX and why?

I’m really excited about seeing some favorite folks speak such as C.C. Chapman, Lynette Young, Jason Falls, Missy Ward, and Kelby Carr. But I’m also really looking forward to hearing Marcy Massura and Maggie Patterson, women I admire but haven’t heard speak yet.

4. Beyond work...what is your passion?

Outside of work, I find joy in my family. My daughter is a budding rock star, plays junior roller derby, and has helped me reconnect with my inner artist. My husband makes me laugh and is the most amazing writer. When the weather doesn’t suck, I love exploring and hiking in the woods.

5. What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

When people meet me, I think they are surprised to realize I’m not all that tough. I’m also really super short, which shocks people, and fatter than my carefully taken photos suggest. 🙂

NMX Speaker Spotlight: Mignon Fogarty

Author:
Mignon Fogarty

Mignon Fogarty

by Dave Jackson – NMX’s Director of Podcasting

I will say this again and again, one of the best reasons to come to NMX is the ability to meet great people, and to have access to those people who you typically don’t. Case in point, I have known of Mignon Fogarty pretty much since the day she started podcasting. No one knew her at first, but when she landed on Oprah everyone know about Mignon Fogarty.

You might know her better as Grammar Girl. At NMX you have a chance to learn from Mignon. For example:

  1.    Your first podcast may not hit it out of the park.

That’s right before she was Grammar Girl she was a producer and co-host of Absolute Science. After finding out that podcasting took a fair amount of time, she switched to another topic she knew and loved (and was easier to produce) Grammar.

  1.    Know What Your Audience Wants – And Give it To Them

Mignon gets feedback from people who ask her questions, and then she answers them. In one of her more popular episodes (who vs. whom), the episode is 4 minutes long. You don’t have to search for the answer, you click play and receive it.

  1.    Don’t Be Afraid to Branch Out

Over the years Mignon has launched the Quick and Dirty Tips Network, New York Times Best Selling books, and the last time I spoke with her she was working on a game/app that would help people learn grammar.

At NMX, we are providing access to people who can help you grow your audience. You can learn directly from them, and you can learn from their example. In his book Contagious: Why Things Catch On author Jonah Berger explains that some of the things that propel your content are usefulness and social currency. Grammar Girl provides very useful information. When you are around people talking grammar, you can quote her podcast and look smart (which then leads more people to check out the true source of this information YOUR PODCAST)

Mignon’s session at NMX is titled, “Practical tips to make your podcast more interesting and to get more clicks, shares, and followers.” When I set out to get the best presenters, I wanted people who could speak from personal experience. Mignon has 519,420 likes on Facebook page, 260 thousand twitter followers, 6,850 followers on Google+, and 4626 followers on Pinterest. I think we can all agree she can talk from personal experience ( I know I just spent 15 minutes checking out her Google+ page – fascinating).

If you’ve never heard her speak, you’re missing out. She recently did a presentation at TEDx on language and it was educational, informative, and entertaining. Buy your tickets and come to NMX and meet Mignon Fogarty. Then maybe you will end up (like she did) on CNN, in the Washington Post, on Martha Stewart the New York Times, USA Today, Businessweek, and many more.  Find out more at quickanddirtytips.com

NMX Speaker Profile: 5 Questions With Ben Greenfield

Author:
Ben Greenfield

Ben Greenfield

In order to highlight NMX ’15 speakers and sessions, we sent each speaker a list of 5 questions so you can learn a little more about them.

Each speaker is asked the same five questions, but as you’ll see as we feature each different speaker, the answers couldn’t be more different.

Today we’re pleased to present 5 Questions with Ben Greenfield:

1. Without repeating your online bio word for word, tell the NMX community who you are and why you're so good at what you do.

As an author, consultant and speaker, I teach people how to achieve superhuman health, longevity, weight loss, lean muscle gain, holistic wellness, and peak performance. My understanding of functional exercise, nutrition, and the delicate balance between performance and health has helped thousands of people around the world achieve their goals and improve their quality of life. My goal in life is to make healthy living inspiring, entertaining and educational, and my “rebel yell” goes like this…

…I love getting fit, feeling good about the way my body looks, and fulfilling my deep-seeded drive to live life to the fullest by achieving difficult feats of physical performance. But I was fed up with feeling like crap from all the extreme exercising, strange foods, feeling of constant stress and soreness, and worry about the toll my hectic lifestyle was taking on my body. So I have found a way of training, eating and living that is perfectly healthy and natural, but still allows me to look, feel and perform at my peak capabilities….

I am currently the founder and owner of Greenfield Fitness Systems, a company that develops innovative and cutting-edge fitness and nutrition services and solutions to help people reach their physical and mental performance goals, whether that be to defy aging and achieve longevity, cross the finish line of an Ironman triathlon, or simply shed a few pounds.

2. What are you speaking about at NMX? Why is this an important topic?

Over the past decade, I’ve built a passionate and responsive audience who tends to “hang on every word I say”. Without ever appearing on Oprah or Dr. Oz, or getting any other big lucky breaks, I’m literally managed to turn myself into a globally recognized fitness expert. I’m not saying this to brag, but rather to alert you to the fact that you too can become a trust expert in your field (with a big following) if you implement the strategies I’ll teach you at NMX. We’ll cover everything from podcasting to content creation to fan interaction, and I’ll give you every tip and trick I know and use!

3. Who are you most looking forward to see speak at NMX and why?

Adam Corolla. He’s funny. He’s kind of weird too. He podcasts. What more could you ask for? He’s sure to be entertaining.

4. Beyond work...what is your passion?

Besides dark chocolate? My twin boys, River and Terran Greenfield. It’s an amazing and breathtaking sense of responsibility to know that you can shape little lives who can grow up to make this world a better place.

5. What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I grew up as a complete geek – programming computers, playing the violin, writing fantasy novels, and as president of the chess club. I’m still an extreme introvert and I get supercharged by being by myself, strumming on a guitar or walking in the forest!

6. Bonus! You were given a discount code to share with your online community. Share your code here and tell potential attendees why they should attend NMX!

If you’re ready to finally take the next step and begin creating content that makes you happy, makes you money and changes the world, then you need to be at New Media Expo. Need a little extra incentive? You can use code “bgreenfield20” to get 20% off the current pricing. See you there – and remember – what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!

NMX Speaker Spotlight: 5 Questions for Jason Falls

Author:

Jason Falls

In order to highlight NMX ’15 speakers and sessions, we sent each speaker a questionnaire so we could feature them here. Each speaker is asked the same five questions, but as you’ll see as we feature each different speaker, the answers couldn’t be more different.

It should come as no surprise that the first speaker to send back responses to his five questions was Jason Falls. Jason has spoken at NMX several times in the past and never fails to deliver. He’s a true professional and one of our favorite people to work with.

1. Without repeating your online bio word for word, tell the NMX community who you are and why you're so good at what you do.

Jason Falls was born at an early age. He stepped in raw toner as a child and began pooping photocopies. Fortunately, they were instructions on blogging and he could read. (Talented lad.) By day he advises clients on digital marketing and public relations. It’s a cover for his night job — thwarting criminals using his mysterious super power of asking questions about their misspent youth that drive them to repent and turn themselves in. He calls  himself the Fink Shrink. He looks good in plaid, but won’t admit it. Goats give him the heebie jeebies. Why wouldn’t you come to a session with someone who writes his bio in the third person?

2. What are you speaking about at NMX? Why is this an important topic?

Social media has created a sea of noise and very little signal. Consumers still mostly rely on traditional media sources for news and entertainment. New media producers are making a dent, but aren’t nearly as big a deal as they think they are. I’m going to look at the media landscape and offer some ideas on where it’s going, how we can stake more of a claim and what it’s going to take for new media producers to continue to grow in relevance and revenue. If you don’t want to be relevant or make money, don’t come to my session. 😉

3. Who are you most looking forward to see speak at NMX and why?

I have yet to hear Tom Webster speak and not learn a ton of stuff. But I’m also excited to see Cosmo Scharf. Because his name is Cosmo Scharf.

4. Beyond work...what is your passion?

Am I allowed to say hallucinogenics? Okay, then I’ll say humor. I was starved for attention as a child, so performing is in my blood and making people laugh makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Unfortunately, I mostly offend people, but every now and then I get it right and make all the failures worth it.

5. What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I saved a guy’s life once. I was young and foolish. It won’t happen again.

6. Bonus! You were given a discount code to share with your online community. Share your code here and tell potential attendees why they should attend NMX!

I think my code is JFALLS20. Or maybe it’s JFALLS10. Or JFALLS50. Try 50 and see if you get 50 percent off. That would be wicked cool and piss Rick off. Heh.
Deb’s note: It’s JFalls20. You can try the others but they won’t work. Rick won’t have a clue if you want to try it anyway.

Speaker Spotlight: Mark Ramsey

Mark Ramsey

More and more surveys are coming out showing how Radio stations are slowly losing their audience. The latest reports out of Edison Research shows that podcast consumption rose 18% over the Spring. Tom Webster will be presenting a session covering these stats in depth.  When I talk to former DJs – now podcasters, I’m amazed at the shackles that these talented people have had to wear while trying to be entertaining. They have to hit traffic and weather on the tens, and don’t forget that it is “Wild and Whacky Wednesday.” One DJ explained how they had 20 seconds to get in, make a point, be entertaining, and get back to the music/advertising. With this in mind, think about how freeing it must be to come from a radio background into podcast. It must feel like a million pounds being taken off your back.

Mark Ramsey is THE guy when it comes to talking about Radio and how it is (or is not) keeping it’s share of listeners, it’s future and more. Now you might be thinking, “Radio?, this is a podcasting event.” Realize everyone behind the microphone is a content creator. Because of Mark’s extensive history he is well aware of the differences between Radio and Podcasting.

At NMX, Mark will be presenting a session titled, “7 Radio Lessons that Can Transform your Podcast.” As Mark as his ear to the ground and paying attention to all media types if you’re attending this session you better have a new pad and a sharp pencil. When I spoke with Mark on the phone, I think we could’ve given him about 4 sessions at NMX as he is just a fountain of knowledge, insight, and experience. You want to circle his 7 Radio lessons that can transform your podcast session.

Mark has consulted with and delivered projects for numerous media, publishing, and digital brands over his career, including Apple, iHeartMedia (Clear Channel), Pandora, CBS, Bonneville, Sirius XM, U-T San Diego, EA Sports, and more. Mark has a full understanding of the audio consuming audience and will be sharing it at the event. Check out Mark’s podcast Media Unplugged with insights into the media.

Dennis Miller and Adam Carolla Launch New Podcast

Author:

by  David Jackson – NMX Director of Podcasting

Adam Carolla Dennis Miller

A new podcast with two comedic legends launched this week: PO’d Cast with Dennis Miller and Adam Carolla.

In the episode entitled “Welcome,” Dennis explains how he got his start in comedy, while Adam discusses being a dad to twins.

As a podcaster, what really appealed to me was hearing Dennis and Adam talk about the format of podcasting. Dennis revealed, “I talked to Larry Miller and asked him what it’s like and he said, You have to go in and know that you can’t map it all out and just start having a conversation. Then it clicks in that you don’t have to have everything all mapped out, and you’ll find it amazingly cathartic. This feels like what I use to pay a shrink $300 an hour for – except we’re getting paid.”

Adam said, ‘This medium is beautiful for people who want to communicate, people who want to share ideas, and people who want to talk. You won’t find this anywhere else. It’s not late night television; it’s not AM radio, it’s just NOT. It’s not that there is anything wrong with that. Their metronome is set at a much different pace, and it has to because of their format.

Look for both Adam Carolla and Dennis Miller at NMX. Adam is participating in a keynote with Podcast One’s Norm Pattiz, while Dennis is co-hosting the 10th Annual Podcast Awards with Emily Morse.

As podcasting gets hotter and hotter, you want to jump in as soon as you can, and get going in the right direction. We have assembled the best presenters with the best subjects to help you launch your own podcast.
