You won’t get far in this industry without hear the phrase “the money’s in the list.” What that means is that you need to build an email list to make the most of the relationship you’re building with your readers. You can use your list for affiliate marketing, selling your own products, or even just driving traffic back to your site. So, today, I have a great group of posts from 2011 that talk about building and using an email list. Enjoy!

1. Beginner’s Guide to Email Marketing for Bloggers by Paul Cunningham at Blogging Teacher

If you’re new to email marking and only have time to read one post, this is the link for you. In this post, Paul writes about the nuts and bolts to using email to connect with your readers. He goes over everything from how to avoid being called a spammer to what kind of content you should consider sending to your list. From the post:

Your mailing list is like a cup of coffee. Too hot and your subscribers can’t handle it. Too cold and it loses its appeal. But when you get the temperature just right they will enjoy what you serve up to them…

Getting that temperature just right means understanding your audience, and delivering them the right types of content at the right times.

2. 5 Most Powerful Ways To Build an Email List Online by Michael Dunlop at Income Diary

I like this post because it’s a list of tools that you can (and should) consider using to build your own email list. It’s important to remember that not every technique is going to work for every person. In fact, you might not like any of the list-building techniques in Michael’s post. But I think it is important to be aware of your options! Writes Michael,

Sending an email to your list about a product takes literally minutes. The reward is always thousands of dollars for me. If I did it 4 times in a month which isn’t much at all, that’s likely to be at least an additional $10,000 in revenue that month! Hopefully by now your excited about the idea of building a list.

We keep saying that the money is in the list, but why is that? As Natalie puts it, your list is your tribe, and being about to build that relationship with them is important! Building a list doesn’t have to be spammy. It can be about making real connections. 4. Aweber vs. Mailchimp: Which is the Best Email Newsletter Service? by Tom Ewer at WPMU.org

Aweber and Mailchimp aren’t you’re only two choices if you’re interested in starting a new mailing list, but they are two of the biggest brands in the industry. I personally grappled with the choice, and ultimately went with Aweber, but I don’t know that I’ll stay with that decision forever, since Mailchimp is a fantastic services as well. In this post, Tom talks about about the differences between these two services and ultimately gives you his preference. Writes Tom,

Both services are popular with good reason. MailChimp’s no-cost entry level service is a huge attraction to many. But the general consensus leans in favor of AWeber when it comes to the most important aspects of list management, such as tracking and spam management.

Your list doesn’t matter one iota if nobody opens the emails you send. In this post, Steve shares his best top for increasing your open rates – and I have to say, I 100% agree with him! I also love how he uses an analogy to describe what he means, and I think anyone who’s read or watched Game of Thrones will totally understand this post! Writes Steve,

In April, the TV show “Game of Thrones” premiered on HBO.  Like many shows on this network, each episode is part of a large story.  So you have to watch each to understand what’s going on.  In a way, it’s similar to the popular shows like The Sopranos, Lost or 24.

What draws people to shows like these is how they’re set up.  An important part of the plot is to create tension.  The writers introduce a number of storylines that are not resolved for many years.  People watch them because they feel compelled to get answers.

6. Are You in the Three Danger Zones of Spamminess? by Phil Hollows at Feedblitz

This list is actually part of entire awesome blog post series about list building for bloggers by Phil, but I wanted to take a moment to highlight this one because I think a lot of list-builders are definitely in the danger zone. Your subscribers signed up for your mailing list. They want to hear from you. Don’t be too afraid to email them! But if you aren’t careful, email programs could accidentally label you as spam, and this means your message will be less likely to reach your readers. Writes Phil,

The thing is, of course, is that most bloggers are untrained as marketers. Specifically, we’re largely not trained as email marketers. We put up our subscription forms and hope for the best. Usually, that’s fine.

But sometimes that lack of expertise can hurt, because it can lead us to create content that ends up setting off content filters. It’s actually all too easy to do, in fact, because in social media we can easily add widgets and plugins that are designed for the web, but which can completely foul up your feed and eviscerate your mailings.

7. Sephora’s Beauty Roulette: A Creative Email List Builing Tactic by DJ Waldow at Waldow Social

In this post, DJ offers a screencast mini case study on one company’s interesting way to get people to sign up on their email list. He talks about what Sephora (a makeup company) does write, along with what he believes they could be doing better. Hopefully, this will inspire you to think of some of your own creative ways to encourage people to sign up for your mailing list. From DJ’s post:

9. The Most Important, Can’t-Ignore Law of Email Marketing by Lisa Barone at Outspoken Media

The “law” Lisa shares in this post may at first seem like common sense, but it is a law that is broken so often that I think it is super important to include on this list. Before you ever send a single message to your email list, make sure you understand Lisa’s post and make sure you don’t make the mistake made by so many so-called “experts” out there. Lisa writes,

Hey you! Yes…you, the one sending out all those email newsletters. We need to talk.

I mean, sure, we’ve already talked to some degree. We’ve talked about best practices for email marketing, how email is NOT dead and why it’s actually the Batman to social media’s Robin, but NONE of that matters if you ignore the most important email marketing law of them all. Get this wrong and the rest of it simply doesn’t matter.

Grab a cup of coffee and sink your teeth into this post. It’s super smart and full of tips about what Garry calls “behavioural emails.” Yes, you can just mass email your list once or twice a week, but how effective are you really being? More importantly, how effective could you be if you did a little research? From Garry’s post:

BlogWorld New York & Los Angeles Breaks Attendance Records

We hope you joined us at our New York and/or Los Angeles events in 2011, and if you did – you helped us break our previous attendance records! Between the two shows, BlogWorld hosted more than 4,750 attendees and 335,000 online viewers.

“BlogWorld West in Los Angeles was our most successful show to date in terms of attendance numbers, exhibitors and sponsors, the caliber of the educational sessions and the speakers we hosted,” said Rick Calvert, CEO and co-founder of BlogWorld & New Media Expo. “The decision to take BlogWorld bi-coastal has broadened our reach and made the event more accessible to attendees all over the country and the world. 10 Best Viral Videos For 2011

It’s that time of the year again where we take a look back at the Best Viral Videos for 2011. From a cat meme and a cat lady to Justin Bieber and one nasty badger, these are some of the best ones for 2011. If you have a favorite I left off, feel free to leave a link to the video in the comments below.

1. Justin BieberUnder the Mistletoe

Some of you might be cringing because I started off with this one, but let’s face it, the kid can bring in the numbers. With currently 68 million views, Justin Bieber’s Under the Mistletoe music video won over the hearts of his fans worldwide. When the public heard he was coming out with a Christmas album, some predicted it would fail. Oh how they were wrong. So very wrong.

2. Jack Sparrow (feat. Michael Bolton) – Saturday Night Live

What’s one of the best ways as a celebrity to make a video with you in it go viral? Make fun of yourself. It works *almost* every time. Michael Bolton was a guest on Saturday Night Live and spoofed several movies – mainly Pirates of the Caribbean. Does this make Michael Bolton relevant again?

3. Nyan Cat

What do you get when you take a cat’s head, put it on a pop tart for a body and make it fly through the air leaving a rainbow trail? Apparently an instant viral video hit. Just the video itself has over 52 million views and when you count in all of the parodies, this is one crazy successful meme.

4. eHarmony Video Bio – The Woman Who Just Loves Cats

Yes, it’s another viral video that involves a cat. I am fairly certain cats will take over the world someday. Or, at least the internet. I posted about this video back in July. It was the most popular video about cats, that didn’t contain any cats. This video reached 2 million views in just one day and now it’s over 18 million. We all found out later this video was indeed a joke and a funny one at that.

5. Rebecca Black‘s My Moment Music Video

I’m sorry to do this to you. I really am. But we can’t talk about viral videos and not mention Rebecca Black. Well, actually, I could – but I’m not going to. Love her or hate her, Rebecca Black became an instant YouTube sensation. In March of this year, her “Friday” video had over 10 million views in just one week. It has since been taken down for copyright issues. Rebecca recorded another video called “My Moment” and it’s received over 30 million views so far. Why? That still seems to be an unsolved mystery.

6. Volkswagen – The Force: Volkswagen Commercial

Watching this Volkswagen commercial never gets old for me. I am sure I’ve raked in at least 50 of those 45 million plus views it has received. This originally aired as a commercial in February during the Super Bowl. I watched all of the Super Bowl commercials and this one was by far my favorite.

7. The Crazy Nastya** Honey Badger

This one just grosses me out. It’s funny, but I have to watch it with one eye open. It’s the narration that gets me and makes me laugh! This badger is on an eating rampage. He eats snakes and a bird and more snakes…What do I learn from this video? Do not EVER mess with a badger.

8. Webcam 101 for Seniors

This is one of the best viral videos of all time. Bruce and Esther Huffman from McMinnville, OR – AKA – “The Happy Huffmans”, were trying really hard to get their webcam to work. What they ended up with was one heck of a funny video. These two are definitely in love and seem like they have a great time together. They have uploaded a blooper reel, as well as more videos on their YouTube channel. I now know who I want to be when I grow up.

9. Golden Voice, Homeless Man Find a Job After YouTube Success

Have you heard the inspirational story of a man named Ted Williams? He’s the homeless man who was discovered for his amazing voice. A local Columbus, Ohio reporter found him on the street corner begging for money. Williams had been living in a tent, as well as served time in prison. Needless to say, he had led one rough life. He now has a job and is turning his life around.

10. Rick Perry – Strong

I hesitated to mention this video because I don’t want this to get political in any way, shape or form. But, I just couldn’t leave this one out. It was uploaded on December 6th and has over 6 million views. I’m not sure if the views are from mostly Perry supporters, or from the fact this video has been parodied and remixed like crazy.

Have a Million SIM cards, Will Travel

The last few weeks have seen me bouncing around Europe as I cover various bits and pieces for the Eurovision Song Contest. Running a regular podcast on that subject means that I had lots of content to post, and with the events, lots of news and social media to interact with.

Which is why my first job on landing at an airport has been to find a local SIM card for my smartphone.

Yes there are some cute options for roaming data, but let’s take Armenia as example. Using my Orange UK SIM card while in the capital city of Yerevan I could roam at £5.50 per megabyte. In the local currency that’s just shy of 4000 dram a megabyte. Or I could walk into the high street store, show my passport, and walk out with a local SIM that would charge just 5 dram a megabyte.

One of these options is going to be for “a real emergency” while another will allow me to stay connected, to reply to Twitter messages, to keep up to data on Facebook, post to my blog, moderate comments…

…and let me upload my podcasts.

Yes, there’s every chance that I can find some wi-fi or use a hotel lobby, but that’s never guaranteed, and in any case it’s still cheaper to go with a local mobile number and the data charge than it is to pay for twenty four hours of hotel wi-fi. The rise of international SIM services can help, but these are still mostly geared to voice, and not data. Those that are can rarely compete with local prices.

If all goes to plan, I’ll be bouncing round Europe for the next three months, and in my bag will be a little collection of SIM cards, each with enough credit for a weekend of “unlimited” browsing on my mobile phone (which doubles as a hotspot). It’s all well and good being able to get stories, but it’s even more important to know you can get them onto the web without relying on anyone else or breaking the bank. Because if you have a great post about a tree falling in the woods that you can’t get online, then did the tree even fall?

2012: The Year of BlogWorld Community

As we close out 2011 and plan ahead for 2012, the most important conversation we’re having is about the BlogWorld community.  Without getting too sappy about it, we know we’d be nothing without our attendees, speakers, exhibitors, sponsors and the folks who engage with us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIN, Google+ and the BlogWorld blog.  All of these different groups make up the BlogWorld community and without you there’d be no us. That’s why for 2012 you’ll see an even more community-focused BlogWorld.

1. Looking for Money in the Grass by Tom Webster at BrandSavant

Tom’s story of finding a $20 bill one day as a child perfectly describes one of the biggest problems in monetization today – junk science. In other words, we’re so hungry for an answer to how to best make money online that we don’t take a moment to verify facts or test a hypothesis. Worse yet, in my opinion, is that we’re willing to do what other bloggers tell us is “best” without taking the time to understand how these actions will translate to our own monetization efforts. We mine our tweets and retweets, and discover that noon is the best time for us to post. Or we discover that more of our emails are opened on Thursdays. In short, we look at historical data, and we find a $20.00 bill. We watch webinars telling us that we are more likely to find that twenty bucks on a weekend, or after midnight, or on a boat, or with a goat. This is my main source of income, so it has a special place in my heart! Kristi’s post on making money as a blogger is amazing. I’ve been freelancing since 2005, so it’s rare to come across a post that is totally original and helpful. If you’re interested in making money online this way, this is a post you want to bookmark. She even covers topics like promotion in this post. Kristi writes,

No matter how you decide to make money online through writing, the one thing that you will need to do to make a good impression with the sites you write for is promote your posts. Blog promotion isn’t just for blogging contests. Blog owners and businesses will be more likely to want more content from you if your posts are some of the most popular ones on their site.

Holy list of resources. This is a fantastic post with over 100 links and tips to help you get started making money online. I love it when a post really delivers, and this one definitely does. They writers can compiled a list here that covers a huge number of monetization methods, from RSS ads to merchandizing to sponsored posts. From the post:

5. Should You Monetize Your New Blog Now or Wait? by John Chow at JohnChow.com

It’s one of the most commonly-asked questions: when should a blog be monetized. As monetization master John Chow says it best, though, there’s no right or wrong way to answer that question. It depends on your blog. However, just because you can monetize right away doesn’t mean that you necessarily should. In the post, John writes,

The right answer for you depends on what your goals for the blog are. If you’re goal is just to make a few extra bucks, then you can use Google Ads from the get go. If you’re looking to build a solid and lasting blogging business that will allow you to live the Dot Com Lifestyle, then my recommendation is to wait before putting on the ads. John Chow dot Com made no money for the first eight months of its life. There were zero ads on it and no affiliate promotion of any kind.

John then goes on to explain the reasons why waiting made sense for him and why it might make sense for you as well. Dudes. This is a seriously awesome post that really does include all the information you need to know to create your own ebook. It’s a super long post, but well worth the read, even if you’ve created ebooks in the past, because it will make your ebooks better. Even better, Jonathan includes both premium and open source/free products that will help you create your next ebook, so even if you’re on a budget, this post will be beneficial for you. It’s another “must bookmark” link! From the post:

While there are a lot of amazing tools to choose from, I realize that not everyone is going to be able to dish out the money needed for the higher end ones.  Mixed in with the premium products that are used in professional digital publishing, there are Open Source and free options included whenever possible.

Really, though, I find that their tips and techniques for using analytics to track sales can work for a variety of monetization methods, including affiliate sales and informational product creation. There are some fantastic methods outlined in this post.

Don’t get me wrong. The default tracking of Google Analytics is extremely powerful. But if you want to get down and dirty with specific aspects of your shop, you will need more power than what is provided out of the box with Google Analytics.

By default, Google Analytics spits out too much broad based information for you to interpret correctly. In order to effectively use analytics, you must learn how to filter out only the information you need and focus on what will make you the most money.

9. A Counterintuitive Guide to Pricing Your Best Work by Tyler Tervooren at Advanced Riskology

I’m frequently asked how I price my services, and although I think the process is different for every person, I really like the argument that Tyler makes in this post: sometimes, you should give away your very best work for free.

The rule I try to follow:

  • General and insanely useful = Free
  • Specific and insanely useful = Paid

The very best pieces of your work that apply to a general audience should be free and if someone wants it in a format that fits their unique situation, there’s a good opportunity to ask for a sale.

Don’t fret about giving away so much for free. That’s a silly problem, and I think too many people worry about it. Instead, worry about how you can give even more of your very best work away for free. When you do that, you find hordes of people paying when you ask them to even if they can’t personally use what you’re selling; they’re so happy with what you’ve given them already, they want to support you however they can.

Trust me, everyone; this post is worth a read. I’m into making money as much as anyone, but some of the points Tyler makes in this post hit the nail right on the head. 10. The Give Me Society by C.C. Chapman at CC-Chapman.com

On the other end of the spectrum from Tyler’s blog, there’s C.C. Chapman’s post about why you shouldn’t be ashamed to charge money when you have something of value to offer. I actually don’t think the two posts are in competition with one another – they both make the point that it is okay to sometimes do work for free, while other times charging for your time. I like C.C’s assertion that we don’t have the right to judge anyone for charging for a service or product. Writes C.C.,

I’ve been seeing more and more people complaining about individuals or groups deciding to charge for some of what they create. This give ME mentality reminds me of whiney first graders who can’t always get a cookie every time they ask for one. Not only do they want fries, but they want them drowned in gravy, covered in cheese and then fed to them by a half naked waitress with a cute smile. In other words, they want it all and they want it on their terms.

So now that I’ve included two posts about whether or not you should charge for your content itself (not just monetizing your blog with ads and the like), I wanted to highlight a post that reviews the different options you have for doing so, should you decide that this is the monetization route for you. This is a fantastic post from David Spark that covers everything from creating content tiers to fabricating scarcity. In his post, David writes,

Now that people are paying for digital content, and we’re making sense of what has value. How have people successfully charged for their content, and how can you do it? Here are seven successful techniques you can use to actually charge people for consuming your content.

12. How to Create an Affiliate Program that Doesn’t Suck by Sean Ogle at Location 180 (Guest Post for Laura Roeder)

Normally, I try to include posts from the blogger’s own site, but this was such a great guest post that I just had to share it! One of the best ways to monetize is to create your own products, whether that’s some kind of informational virtual product (like an ebook or e-course), a physical product (like a print book or t-shirts), or an event (in-person or virtual like a webinar). To help make more sales, having a good affiliate program is key. In this post, Sean talks about how to make that affiliate program attractive. Remember, the more people promoting your products, the more sales you’ll ultimately make. Writes Sean,

Just yesterday I received an email about promoting a product that said this:

“Includes an incredible affiliate offer where you can make nearly 25% off every single sale!”

The product was $47 with a 20% commission and no other incentives.  I’m sorry but $9.40 just doesn’t excite me that much.

The reason most affiliate programs suck is because most owners of these programs care only about themselves.  They don’t want to devote the time and money to doing it right, which results in very few sales for you, and even less money for your affiliates – which let’s face it, is the whole point.

New Lightbox App Feature – Your Photo Journal

The social photo app for Android, Lightbox, unveiled a new app today with a new feature – The Photo Journal – which allows others to follow your updates, as well as like, comment and share. The fantastic thing about this new photo journal is it requires no extra work on your part. Just update the app and you’re good to go.

The previous URL Lightbox users were given has now been turned into their very own photo blog, where the photos are automatically organized. Here’s a description of The Photo Journal from the Lightbox app page:

YOUR PHOTO JOURNAL:Lightbox is a place to capture, enhance, and share your moments. Photos you post are automatically organized into a timeline of postcards on Lightbox.com. Keep them private or selectively share them with friends, family, or the entire Lightbox community.

MANAGE YOUR PHOTOS ONLINE:
All the photos you take with the Lightbox app are automatically uploaded to Lightbox.com for safe storage. So if you lose your phone, you won’t lose your memories.

As you can see in the screenshots of the app above, each user is given a follow button. When you hover over their photo, you’re given the opportunity to “like” that particular photo. And just like the blogs we are all familiar with, you can comment, Tweet, Facebook or add to Google+ each individual photo page.

The Lightbox app update was already added to the Android market this morning.

Increasing Email Subscriber Engagement on Top of Marketers’ Minds for 2012

As 2011 is coming to a close and we are inching closer and closer to 2012 (I know…I can’t believe it either), it’s time to take a step back and look at your blogs. Ask yourself some questions like what did you do right, what did you do wrong and what would you like to focus more on in 2012.

Building up your email subscriber list might be one New Year’s resolution for you to consider for your business. Allison gave us some fantastic insights and ideas on how she helped increase her client’s mailing list. In fact, she helped triple it in less than 10 minutes.

According to a study done by StrongMail in conjunction with Zoomerang, marketers plan on spending more money and time on their email subscriber list. They want to increase both the number of subscribers, as well as the engagement factor.

When marketers were asked to “Please indicate the programs for which you plan to increase spend”, email marketing won out with 60%. Social media wasn’t far behind with 55%.

When asked what their most important email marketing initiatives were for 2012, subscriber engagement came out on top with 48% and growing opt-in email lists came in with 32%.

Why You Should Delete Blog Comments

Catching up on my morning reading, I bumped into Thursday’s smart piece Paying Attention to What People Are Posting On Your Blog and it sparked a realization of my own: one of the best gifts I give the readers of my blog is to be aggressive with the delete button on comments.

My rule of thumb is simple: If it’s not contributing to the conversation, it shouldn’t be included on the page.

This has a lot of interesting ramifications because, among other things, it highlights how blog software isn’t really designed for true management of the comment stream. Want to know what I mean? Try to move a comment from one blog entry to another. Yeah, not so easy, short of cut/paste dancing.

More importantly, though, as anyone who has participated in a conversation about religion, politics or sports already knows, conversations are fragile and need to be nurtured to blossom into an interesting and — occasionally! — enlightening discussion. Get someone slipping in wisecracks or distracted by their personal bugaboo and the conversation quickly degrades into banal jibes and an uncomfortable agreement to “agree to disagree” and more on.

The same plays out on your blog, of course, and while I do believe that it’s important to encourage and honor differing perspectives and opinions, I also believe that the path to a great blog discussion is to prune the comments and eliminate those that don’t contribute to the level of discourse you seek.

I know first hand from my AskDaveTaylor tech blog: with over a thousand commentaries each month, it’s inevitable that I get the spammers that slip through Akismet (easy to delete), the people who criticize other posters on the site (I have zero tolerance, they’re all axed immediately) and the people who simply don’t respect any opinion other than their own. It’s the last group that can be tricky to manage, but I believe strongly that my blog is my world, I’m the managing editor, and it’s my responsibility to the readers that I keep the discussion at a mature, adult and beneficial level.

Switch to my parenting blog — Go Fatherhood — and it’s even more tricky, because while people might argue about how to get a Nintendo 3DS on a wifi network, it’s a sure bet that they’re going to disagree about how to discipline a teen for being disrespectful, how to advise a tween about honor and friendship or how to best get a baby to stop waking up in the middle of the night, crying for a drink.

So that’s how I handle it, being rather heavy-handed with my virtual editorial pen. How do you manage and maintain the discourse on your site?
