Covering Red Carpet Events For Your Entertainment Blog


One of the best ways to get a ton of great content and get your blog noticed, is to get involved as press on a red carpet event. Whether you’re covering a movie premiere in your city, or an award show in Los Angeles, you’re bound to get amazing interviews and unique content that will drive viewers to your blog. I’ve been to several award shows (MTV Movie Awards, Teen Choice Awards, etc) and have some tips and tricks for covering red carpet events for your entertainment blog!

Before the Event:

  • Apply for a Press Pass. This is a must. You can’t just show up at the event! Most events allow for press applications a couple months before the show airs. For instance, I just applied for an MTV Video Music Awards pass and the event isn’t until September! If you’re searching for awards shows, you can pretty much just Google the show + press and you’ll be directed to the press site. I put together a calendar of events I want to attend, and start searching early. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t get accepted, and don’t reach for the stars! There are so many bloggers applying for passes, the events are starting to get picky.
  • Ask for a Talent List: Most venues provide this, but if they don’t, ASK! This will give you an idea of who they expect to walk the red carpet, and you can make to research the talent in advance and …
  • Put Together a List of Questions: Come with a cheat sheet! And try to be original. All the other interviewers will be asking who the celebs are looking forward to seeing, are they excited to be there, and what are they wearing? Instead ask questions that your audience will want to hear/read. Be original and forward thinking. And try to ask several of the celebrities the same question so you can edit it together as a montage. Sometimes you’ll only get to call out a question to a celeb in passing – not enough for it’s own interview, but you can group their responses (thrown casually over a shoulder) with others.
  • Charge Your Batteries. You’ll probably be bringing your video camera and (if you’re lucky to be able to use it) your digital camera. Charge your batteries and bring extras!
  • Come Prepared. Bring your laptop if you plan on uploading information right after the show. Bring your phone if you want to live Tweet the event. Bring a microphone for your video camera if you can! You’d rather be over-prepared than under-prepared.

Day of The Event:

  • Be Early. They want you there hours before the event starts so they can get everyone organized and in their pint-sized space on the red carpet.
  • Relax. It’s a tense environment when you’re surrounded by press. Everyone is sizing each other up, jostling around, asking for more space. Stand your ground (in your little 12 inch space on the carpet) and relax. Try to have fun and make friends with the people around you! I once had some of the press around me calling out to celebrities for me to interview (ones they weren’t interested in covering of course)!
  • Stay Hydrated. All of my events have been during the day, in the sunlight, in Los Angeles. Keep water bottles on you at all times!
  • Be Prepared to Scream. Everyone around you wants to score the same big interviews, so be prepared to call out to your favorite celebrities to ask them to talk to you. Be courteous, but be prepared to be heard.
  • Be Realistic. You may want to chat with Robert Pattinson, but the reality is that he’s not going to even walk the carpet at an awards show (although, two years ago he did and I have a video interview with him to prove it!). And if he does, it will be one minute before showtime, and he’ll walk right past you. The big celebs really only talk to the big entertainment studios at the front of the carpet … The exception to this is at movie premieres, when most of the celebs will talk to most of the press.
  • Pay Attention. While you’re interviewing one celebrity, be on the look-out for another that might be coming nearby. They start to arrive in quick succession, the closer you get to show time.
  • Talk to Everyone. You never know who the next big star is going to be, so why not interview the smaller celebrities who are willing to stick around and chat. As long as it fits with your audience, make an effort to talk to as many celebs as you can. It’s great practice, and who knows … if other celebrities see people lined up to talk to you, they may want to join in!

After the Event

    Get Your Information Up Quickly. Get some info up as fast as possible – a few images, some video clips. Fan sites are scrambling to get as much footage as they can, as quickly as they can! Just elude to the fact that the longer, edited versions are coming later.

  • Brand Your Interviews. If you took video footage, make sure to brand your Youtube channel and footage (or whatever video site you use) so that if someone else embeds it elsewhere, your blog is promoted! It’s a great way to gain more readers.
  • Thank Your Event Contacts. Send out a quick email, letting them know how you covered the event and that you look forward to being involved in future ones. Soon you’ll find yourself invited to them, bypassing the press part altogether!

    Great article! I’m always looking for advice about getting more exposure for my blog. I’ve already begun covering events. It’s a downer to get rejected for the big ones, but I just plan to keep trying. Sometimes, I’ve had better luck the 2nd or 3rd time around especially after doing some targeted networking (i.e. writing about the event you want to cover live even if you don’t attend and send links back to interested parties).
