An Analysis of the Blogosphere: Its Present and Future Impact

Author:

I am very excited to tell you that “An Analysis of the Blogosphere: Its Present and Future Impact,” a BlogCatalog commissioned study of the blogosphere by Spectrum Brand Strategy, LLC, was recently completed. I am even more excited to have the report in time for BlogWorld Expo 09 and to be able to share the findings with all of the conference attendees and exhibitors.

The report, which examines timely topics like “the impact of blogs on traditional news and commerce” and “can bloggers be trusted” should resonate with bloggers and social media junkies who earlier this week witnessed the collapse of the 69-year-old traditional media juggernaut Gourmet magazine and the release of FTC guidelines that will require bloggers to disclose any freebies or payments they receive from companies as compensation for product reviews. The report also shares bloggers’ insight on their current environment, involvement with microblogging and opinions on future media trends.

Having experienced BlogWorld for the first time last year, I know that it takes a special kind of person to absorb and apply the vast amounts of knowledge shared at the conference. “An Analysis of the Blogosphere: Its Present and Future Impact” is a tangible and valuable resource that will complement many of the subjects covered in the conference sessions. I hope that you will stop by the BlogCatalog booth to say hi, pick up a copy of the report and give us a chance to get to know you. See you at BlogWorld!

Guest Post BlogWorld Alum Scott Monty Ford Motor Company

Author:

Has it been just over a year since the last Blog World Expo? I vividly remember attending that one – I saw colleagues, friends and made new acquaintances, sharing knowledge and learning some exciting new things. And what an amazing and wild year it’s been in the time since.

In September 2008, I was still getting my feet wet at Ford Motor Company – having been there all of two months. There was a lot to learn and a lot to do, and as we embarked on setting our social media strategy, we had to remain aware of and active in the social space. I like to say that we subscribe to the Woody Allen philosophy of social media: “Ninety percent of social media is just showing up.”

We also believe in the Yogi Berra corollary to that: “It’s the other 50 percent that’s hard.”

So just how does a Fortune 10 company go about embarking on such a journey, and how has Ford been able to turn the ship so deftly? Well, I’m not gonna give all of that away here – you have to come to my keynote to hear the Full Monty. 🙂

But what I will tell you is that we couldn’t have done it without two very key elements – elements that make a huge difference in the success of our social media efforts:

1)      Great leadership: through our CEO Alan Mulally (who joined the company in September 2006) and his dynamic executive team, we have a solid business plan that’s putting the company right.

2)      Great products: having strong leadership and a plan means we have the ability to execute on that plan, and that means creating first-class products on a global scale. Vehicles that people want and value with a level of quality unsurpassed by even Toyota and Honda. The proof is in seeing them up close – which is why we’ll have some at the show for you to drive or sit in.

With that in place, our progress and success in the social media space has been that much easier to accomplish. But there’s also another secret ingredient here as well – one that may not come from hiring talent or investing in design and R&D.

Passion.

From the very first time I walked through the doors of Ford’s world headquarters in Dearborn, I was struck by the amazing passion that was apparent in every single person I’ve met at Ford. And that continues to this day. We all want this company to succeed, and we’re committed to making it happen.

When you have internal evangelists like that, it’s not a stretch to think that there are some like that on the outside as well. And that’s a big part of where we’re going with social media.

I look forward to sharing more of The Ford Story with you on October 15 in Las Vegas. Until then, remember: whatever happens in Vegas stays on Google.

Too Much Conference Swag? Time to Get Charitable!

Author:
If you're not wearing shirts you receive at conferences, consider donating to the needy.

If you're not wearing shirts you receive at conferences, consider donating to the needy.

Do you have to pack an extra tote bag in your luggage so you can carry home all your conference swag? If so, what happens to the swag when you get home? Be honest, now. Do you use half the stuff you grab from sponsors? Do you help yourself to hotel shampoos and soaps only to throw these goodies into a draw for “just in case?”.  Not to lecture, but to take stuff you’re never going to use only leads to more clutter and landfill. Moreover, there are some people who can put certain swaggy items to good use. Before accepting an item from a sponsor or vendor, consider whether or not this is something you’re really going to use. If you have a lot of conference swag you don’t know what to do with, consider getting charitble. There are plenty of people who can really use your swag.

Check it out:

  • Hotel toiletries: Donate to local homeless, senior citizen homes and battered women’s shelters. They’ll all put shampoos, sewing kits, soaps and cotton balls to very good use.
  • Clothing items: Donate to the homeless or needy.
  • Books, CDs and magazines: Donate to the library.
  • Toys: Really, do you use that gel yoyo? Donate it to Toys for Tots or a homeless shelter.
  • Business & stationery items: Donate to homeless shelters, schools and occupational learning centers.
  • Tote Bags: Use for your grocery shopping or donate to shelters.
  • Food and grocery items: Donate to the homeless shelter or food kitchen.

What do you do with YOUR conference swag?

Your Help With Next Year Requested

Author:

The major goal of the milblog track at Blog World is to talk with you. Not to you, not at you, not about you, but with you. We want to meet you, get to know you, and have you get to know us as well.

To that end, we will have an unofficial panel Friday 16 October at 1 pm (1300 hours) at the Army Milblog Lounge in the exhibit hall. That panel has but one purpose: to hear from you what you would like to see and/or hear in the milblog track next year.

So, what would you like to hear? What would you like to see?

Come by and let us know. Talk, enjoy some refreshments, and let’s begin planning on making next year even bigger and better than this year.

Hope to see you there.

Don't Let The "Blog" Fool You

Author:

Kristie Wells & Dave Peck

When you go to Burger King, there is more than just burgers right? I mean you can get a salad, milkshake, those yummy chicken fries..oh and an Angry Burger too.(Yes, it is a burger, but I had to work it in. I have a thing for those Angry Burgers.)  So, just like most things, there is more to them then what they say in their name. Blog World Expo is no different. There is so much more going on at this event then just talking about blogs.  When I tell my friends I am going to it next week, I get comments all kinds of from “Do you all Blog each other when your there?” to ” How much Blog can fit into one room?”(Lame comments I know,  my friends are lame.)

So, what is  my point you ask.. there is much more to Blog World Expo then blogging.. let me share some  of these things. I will do it in list form, as people like lists.

-The expo floor!! Companies like.. Ford, Ebay, Radian6, Technorati and more will have booths on the floor. You can walk around and meet the employees’, CEOs and owners of these great companies. All these people will be in one room, a big room mind you, there for you to chat with.

-Not that I am promising anything but if these companies are all there they usually bring…. SWAG!! We all like swag dont we? (Bring an extra bag to carry it back..im just saying..)

-Friendships. Last year I went to BWE and meet some amazing people who I still friends with today. I have already gotten emails making sure I am going so we can hook up. I am talking to you  Jodi , Veronica and Ewan

-Podcasting. Prior to the New Media Expo was its own event. The two events are now one, which makes them both that much stronger. I mention this because there are many resources for podcasters. Heck there is a whole track on it!

-Might I add there are tracks on Community, Moms, Health, and yes even Social Media. (Maybe next year Dad’s will get their own track..ya right)

-So you are learning about Podcasting, Social Media, Blogging, Online Communities…but you ask “How do I make money doing it?” Then the Monetization track is for you!

–  Networking. Yes, we have Twitter, Facebook and hundreds of other Social Networking sites. Yet, you can not beat face time. There are going to be hundreds of people who are interested in the same things as you, want to learn from you and you from them.  When the Expo is over, you will still be tweeting about the things you learned and building your relationship.

-What did you say? You went all the way to Vegas to see the night life? Well ask and you shall receive… Oct 15 there is the Techset & Blogworld After-hours party and October 16 there is the BlogWorld Opening Night Party.

There have I made my case yet? So when you see me walking the Expo floor or sitting in a session come say “Hi” and pull up a seat, no doubt we will have lots to talk about.  What? Who am I?…oh sorry.. I am Dave Peck, I blog at NewMediaChatter.
