Most bloggers and podcasters dream of getting featured in mainstream media. I see it more and more every day – magazines cite bloggers, radio show hosts mention podcasts they listen to, and television journalists interview “online experts” in whatever field they’re covering. Who doesn’t want a piece of that pie?

I hope you’re already using HARO (Help a Reporter Out), but today’s video features another great technique online content creators can use to land major press for their content. Derek Halpern calls it “The Drafting Technique” and it’s actually quite simple. Check out this video to start using this technique yourself, no matter what your niche:

How to Quickly Watermark Every Photo for Your Blog

One of the struggles for bloggers who like using their own photographs is that people aren’t afraid to steal them for use on their own blog. Watermarking your photos won’t stop everyone, of course, but it is a measure you can take to deter others as well as ensure that you’re still getting credit, even when your picture is taken without your consent.

I personally never watermarked pictures in the past because…well…it always seemed like such a hassle. Then, I found this video on how to set up a action in Photoshop to add a watermark quickly and to batches of photos, rather than going through the steps of doing each one individually. Genius! Hope it helps you guys too:

Of course, it should go without saying, but don’t watermark images you don’t own. Also, if you want the picture without the watermark as well, make sure you also save a copy in another folder – once that image is on there, it can be difficult to remove.

Kony 2012: The Power of Social Media at Work to Change the World

This morning, one of my friends posted a video called “Kony 2012.” I didn’t really take notice of it at first because I’m not a super political person, but it did catch my eye because I thought, “Hm, I don’t remember hearing anything about a candidate called Kony in her state.” Then I saw another friend post it. Then another. So I decided to watch it.

Thirty minutes long, and I watched every second of it. That’s not the norm for me, especially in the morning when I’m busy answering emails and getting set up for work for the day. I usually just don’t have the time. But for Kony 2012, I made the time…and I hope you will too.

Kony isn’t a politician; he’s a war criminal that is literally stealing children from their beds to he can arm them and force them to kill. I’ve heard of that happening, but I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t know his name, nor did I know that we’re talking about tens of thousands of children. And that’s what this campaign is all about. He’s able to stay under the radar because people have no idea who he is. We need to change that so he can be captured and brought to justice.

It’s a powerful message, but what I think is interesting is that we’re going to watch something even more powerful in real-time: the use of social media to make a huge change in the world. Already, through Facebook and other social media sites, Invisible Children has made a huge difference, gaining support to raise money, reach politicians, and get the world out about Kony’s crimes.

Twenty years ago, this wasn’t possible. Today it is, thanks to social media. That, to me, is chill-inducing and more exciting than just about anything going on in the new media industry.

I’ll admit it: video makes me nervous. I don’t think it’s a good tool for everyone. I’m a much better writer. But, I do think every blogger out there should at least try it. Videos can be a great tool to help you promote your blog and reach new audience members. Plus, it’s great practice for public speaking if you intend to someday do webinars or live presentations.

So, today’s topic is video creation. Some people refer to themselves as “vloggers” while others use the term “video marketer” and still others simply consider themselves bloggers who do video posts from time to time. However you put it, their advice on video creation is great!

1. The Benefits of Creating Talking Head Videos for Your Blog by Darren Rowse at Problogger

Your videos don’t need to be elaborate or have a a Hollywood budget to be effective. In this post, Darren talks about the advantages to just setting up a camera and speaking to your audience. The connect you can make with readers by being brave enough to post videos is awesome. Darren says in his video,

Really, for me, a lot of it comes down to the personal connection that you can build with your readers. I’ve lost count of the times at conferences particularly but even online through emails where I get emails and have conversations with people who say, “I feel like I know you.”

I still personally believe that you should do what you’re good at and what makes you happy, and that isn’t video for everyone. However, in this video, Lewis Howes and James Wedmore give a really convincing argument for why you should be using video if you want to drive traffic, especially as a business owner. I think they make some great points about using screen capture, Power Point, and audio with pictures if you’re not comfortable in front of the camera – definitely an idea that I’m going to steal! From the video:

What you want to look for when you’re producing content is what are the things that an article an article couldn’t do that video can do for you.

Videos make me nervous enough – the thought of livestreaming is enough to send me into a tizzy! However, in this post, James gives ten great tips to help you get started. If you’re well-prepared, the idea of doing video, whether it is livestreaming or recorded, is a lot easier to swallow.

Video is not a one time event – you wouldn’t just create one blog post and be done with it. How does that build community?  It doesn’t – and that’s the point. Which is why it’s always a bit funny to me when companies try to make one video, push it to “go viral” and be done with it. That’s not how the web works for any content formats if you’re looking to build equity in the world and create an audience.

Jay’s blog always makes me laugh, even when I’m having a bad day. I’ll refrain from naming names in this instance, but the other day I was watching a video from a blogger who was looking so crazy that I actually forwarded it to non-blogging friends for a laugh. So, Jay’s post about looking presentable if you’re going to be on camera is a valid one! Jay writes,

Please, for the love of all that’s holy, look at yourself objectively on camera. If you look like a hobo in poorly lit room, I don’t care how good your content is. At that point, I’m worried that you have a body hidden somewhere in the shadows where you’re filming.

In this guest post, Robyn covers all the best equipment choices you can make if you want to get into making videos. Then, in a second follow-up post, Robyn goes over some excellent tips for new video creators about lighting and audio. From Robyn’s post:

Video bloggers such as Gary Vaynerchuk have used online video as the media of choice to great effect.

But many bloggers are intimidated by the technical side of producing a good video. At the same time, many bloggers that do use video do a pretty bad job of it in terms of production value. This could be improved with a little knowledge and a little money.

How to be a Great Video Producer

Do you want to create a video for your website or blog, but don’t know exactly how or where to start?  Video production can be a fun experience when things go right.  When things go wrong, it can be simply miserable.

The best way to make sure a video comes out exactly how you want is by hiring a producer.  A producer’s job is to carry out your vision, and s/he will manage every step along the way.

There are all sorts of situations that can affect a production: bad weather conditions, cable shorting out, operator error, unforeseen issues, but a great producer will work through whatever is thrown their way and get it done

With video production tools becoming more affordable by the day, you may be interested in creating a video for yourself, a friend or business associate.  If you’re just getting started, there are numerous pitfalls that could prevent you from reaching the finish line with a smile. But if you follow there three tips, you’ll be starting out on the right path.

1.  Master the three steps of video production. Pre-production is where you will plan, draft the script, find your talent, and find locations.  Production is the actual shoot.  It’s where the “Lights, camera, and action,” happens.  Post-production is where your editor will take all of the elements including: video, graphics, narration, photos, and make some video magic.  If you’re able to learn and complete each step exceptionally, you’ll have nothing to worry about.

2. Learn how to shoot and edit. Even professionals are having to wear many hats these days.  If you have a limited, or no, budget, you’ll be amazed at how much you’ll be able to do yourself if you start learning the basics.  When you’re shooting, practice your framing, hold the camera still, and watch your audio and lighting.  As far as editing goes, learn how to use non linear editing software.  There are free programs for the Mac and PC to get started.  They key is practice, get critiques, and keep at it.

3.  Be a strong leader. As a producer, you’ll have to make decisions during a project that will affect the end product. You’ll need to come up with solutions to problems, make logistical and editing decisions.  It always helps to have a team to work with, but at the end of the day, the producer is responsible for everything, and regardless of what happens, the show must go on.

It will be a learning process.  Stand by your decisions, learn from your mistakes, and make an effort to get better.  Your goal should be to have fun (though it is work), and it should get more enjoyable each time you give it a shot.

Top 10 Viral Videos For 2011 (January-June)

By analyzing the charts at Marketing Charts I’ve come up with the Top Ten Viral Videos for 2011 (or at least the first half)!

From this perspective I can see a pretty clear division among the topics: cute kids vs. heart-pounding stunts. There aren’t really any “non-produced” videos in this grouping. No Charlie Bites or Double Rainbows! But we do have advertisements, informational topics, fun with the Royal Wedding, and all those stunts.

1. Evian – Roller Babies

I mean really, what’s not to love about this video? It has babies. And rollerskates. And cooing. All to the music of Rapper’s Delight, which gets everyone on their feet! It’s actually been around since October, 2010 but still continues to be a hit with viewers.

2. Volkswagen – The Force: Volkswagen Commercial

Volkswagen keeps generating hit after viral hit with their fun and catchy videos. This one features a pint-sized Darth Vader who uses the Force when he discovers the all-new 2012 Passat in the driveway. It originally aired during the February 2011 Super Bowl broadcast and is super cute. (Hmm, do I see a theme with young ‘ens leading the pack?)

3. T-Mobile – The T-Mobile Royal Wedding

With all the fanfare of the Royal Wedding, it’s no surprise that this one went viral. T-Mobile’s Royal Wedding Dance celebrates the marriage of William and Kate with the help of a host of royal look-alikes and music from East 17.

4. DC Shoes – Ken Block’s Gymkhana THREE, Part 2; Ultimate Playground; l’Autodrome, France

Like stunts? Race car driving? Insanity? Then this video is for you. Seriously, just the sound of this video got my heart racing, and it didn’t stop racing until well after the video finished!

5. DC Shoes – Ken Block Gymkhana Two, The Infomercial

Another one by the folks at DC Shoes Film. Actually this came prior to the one above! This one was produced specifically to market Ken Block’s first-ever Rally TeamWorks Collection. It includes stunts, surprises, explosions and … more stunts.

6. Danny MacAskill – Way Back Home

A lot longer than most of the videos (at almost 8 minutes), this video is more of a story as it follows Danny MacAskill on his journey from Edinburgh back to his hometown Dunvegan, in the Isle of Skye. Complete with incredible bike skills of course!

7. Skittles Touch – Cat

Okay. This one gets my vote for “viral because it’s weird”. And a little bit disturbing!!

8. Air New Zealand – Mile High Madness with Richard Simmons

What could be a better recipe for viral than throwing Richard Simmons (and a bunch of Jazzercise-style dancers) in a video that discusses flight safety?

9. Call of Duty – Modern Warfare Reveal Trailer

If normal stunts aren’t for you, why not throw in a bit of violence in the form of a video game? You even have to agree that you’re over the age of 18 to watch.

10. David Cornfield Melanoma Fund – Dear 16-Year-Old Me

And then there’s something with a powerful message. The video from DCMF is graphic, but real, with important details to everyone (but mostly to teens) regarding melanoma. Although it starts of fun and silly, the video quickly delves into the complications associated with skin cancer, and the increased risks of developing it with sun exposure and tanning.

You’ll notice that Friday, by Rebecca Black, is missing from the list. Why? Because it was taken down by Youtube for copyright issues. So, while it may have gone viral (and I talk about it here), it’s not here to stay.

Vlogging When You’re Shy

Earlier this month, Nikki made the excellent point that we should all be including more video blogs – or vlogs – as part of our monthly posts. While it is true that vlogging can help you connect with the reader, I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that vlogging still makes me a little…itchy. I’m just not 100% comfortable in front of a camera yet, and even though I’m pushing myself to be more and more outgoing, vlogging is tough for me.

Yet, I love making videos.

I find that not only are videos fun for the reader, but they get my creative juices flowing, stretching my innovation muscles in ways that traditional writing doesn’t do it for me anymore. I love all aspects of direction, editing, and producing videos, and I have since I was in high school. I’m just not a fan of being the star.

So what’s a girl to do? How can I vlog more often, even though I’m still shy in front of the camera? The answer is easier than you may think: Don’t be in the video.

Yeah, right. How could that possibly work? I know, I know, that’s what you must be thinking. But oddly enough, with a good starting concept, you don’t have to be the person speaking to the camera to create an awesome vlog for your website.

Point in case: This past weekend, as I’ve mentioned before, I was at a gaming conference, and while there, I did some freelance work for video game website Spawn Kill. As part of my post for that site, I created a video called What Is MAGFest, which I fully intended to actually be in…before I got sick and totally lost my voice. The content was getting less and less fresh each day that I was sitting on the project, waiting to feel better, so I decided to roll with it. I used the clips I had, created some transitional message slides, and finished the piece, all without being on camera for a single second. Take a moment to watch the video and you’ll see what I mean:

This isn’t the first time I’ve created awesome video content for a website without being in the video at all. In fact, after BlogWorld Expo 2010, I created a video from the conference that didn’t have me in it at all:

I’ve done other such videos for various websites, all fairly well-received by my readers, none with me in them. What did all of these videos have in common though?

  • Faces: Mine wasn’t in them, but others’ were. It’s hard to make a video interesting when it doesn’t have any people in it. I should clarify – it is important to not just have people in your video, but people actually talking to the camera in some way. It just helps the viewer connect.
  • A Strong Concept: Before you begin filming, it is important to have a strong concept for your video. You won’t be on camera to lead the conversation, so you have to ask pointed questions and encourage people to answer in a way that restates the question when possible. Know the story you want to tell with your video, and filming will go much more smoothly.

Of course, this type of video typically includes many small pieces and not only takes a long time to film, but a very long time to piece together. Not counting filming or uploading at all, the MAGFest video, which was less than five minutes long, probably took about four hours to create. If you simply record yourself speaking to the camera, it takes a lot less time to create a vlog.

The bottom line? Don’t let your shy nature stop you from vlogging. With some creativity, you can create video content even if you don’t want to be in the actual video.

  • Upload the images to your blog. Don’t hotlink to other images because 1. It’s bad practice and 2. You never know when the hosting site will remove the image or replace it with something else altogether!
  • Make sure that you images are of a good quality and source them at the bottom of the post. Don’t steal! If you are searching for pictures online, make sure you look for the Creative Commons License (more on that on our Creative Commons 101). My favorite sites for free photos are SXC and Flickr (if you search correctly).
  • Align images properly. If you right or left align them, make sure the text wraps around the image, and I personally think it looks best if the image is less than half the width of your main container. If your image is going to be larger than that, I think its best to center the picture and not have the text wrap at all.
  • Resize your images. If you have a very large image, resize it to fit the container of your blog. This way you don’t have to worry about it breaking your computer or taking a long time to load!


Adding Videos to Your Post:

  • Search for the best quality of a video. Many people upload the same videos (from television, interview clips, etc) – but some are better than others!
  • Embed a size that fits your blog. You don’t want to break your container.
