Click Millionaires by Scott Fox is the latest book for people hoping to make money online. I don’t know about you, but whenever someone makes the promise to teach you how to quit your job and become an Internet millionaire, I get a little suspicious. As someone who earns a living through virtual work, I know just how much time, dedication, and hard work it takes to be successful. I find that many of the books out there on this topic are nothing more than a step above scams.

This is not the case with Click Millionaires, but that said, make sure you read this entire review before pulling out your credit card. Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book to review.

“The traditional American dream centered on individual financial achievement–where becoming a ‘millionaire’ allowed you to control your own life, afford anything you want, and live on your own terms. But today the phrase ‘Click Millionaire’ captures the revolutionary idea that lifestyle benefits like independence, security, and self-confidence–formerly only available to the wealthy–are now available to anyone who chooses to build a successful lifestyle business online. As you can see from the definition above, money is important to Click Millionaires, but it’s not the only thing that matters to the ‘new rich.’ Money is not the destination on your life’s road trip; it’s just the gas to help you enjoy the journey.” – Scott Fox, Click Millionaires

First, before purchasing any book, I think it’s important to understand the target audience. In the case of Click Millionaires, you’ll find this book helpful if you are a beginner. Click Millionaires gives a great overview of all the ways you can get started making money online. He covers blogging, podcasting, creating videos, freelancing and more – all good options for people unhappy at their office jobs and hoping to get started earning money online. If you are already well-versed in the world of making money online, though, Click Millionaires is not going to be as useful to you.

Scott’s book is great about giving you brief looks at all the avenues you can take for success online, but whatever you choose, you’re going to have to do more research to find out exactly how to optimize your time online. If Scott went into that kind of detail in his book, it would be be thousands and thousands of pages! So be warned – if you decide, for example, that podcasting is the right route for you, you’re going to have to become more educated about it. You can’t simply read Scott’s book and turn into a podcasting millionaire. What is great, however, is that Scott gives readers tons of resources for finding more information. He sets you up for success.

The most valuable part of Click Millionaires is Part Five: How to Find Your Niche on the Internet. Choosing a niche is super important to making money online, and I believe that Scott explains how to do this very well. I also love all the interviews he includes in this book. It’s great to hear about stories straight from the people who’ve found success online.

I don’t agree with every piece of advice in this book. In fact, I think that Click Millionaires makes the same mistake that make “make money online” books and information products make – it sounds too easy. Making money online is anything but easy. Can you do it? Can you become a millionaire online?

Yes, I think you can. But it takes years of hard work and most people will never get there. The people who have become overnight successes online caught lightening in a bottle. They won the Internet business lottery. So be wary of anyone selling you hope. Don’t buy Scott’s book if you think you’ll be lounging on your own private island this time next year. Buy Scott’s book because you realize there is potential to earn money online and you want to learn about some of the paths you can take to do this.

Want to come to your own conclusions about Click Millionaires? This is your chance! Scott has graciously offered THREE copies of Click Millionaires to lucky BlogWorld readers.

How to Win:

Scott talks about making money in niche markets in his book, giving examples that range from a flight attendant who tells work stories via her podcast to a man who runs a message board about raising chickens. He’s also on the Making Money from Your Favorite Niche Market panel for BlogWorld New York. So, to win a copy of Scott’s book, leave a comment telling us: What is your favorite niche site?

Do you have a favorite fashion blogger who inspires you? Are you in awe of the videos your local baker posts about how to decorate cakes? Would you love to be as successful online as a friend who runs a forum for novice gardeners? Tell us about this site and you’ll be entered to win a copy of Scott’s book! Hurry, the entry deadline is May 25, 2012!

(Fine print: Winner will be drawn using Random.org and notified via email. Winner must respond within five business days to claim this prize. You may comment as often as you like, but only one comment per person will count as an entry. Commenting from multiple accounts and other attempts to cheat the system will result in disqualification. Only comments answering the above question will count as entries, though other comments are welcome. Odds of winning depend on the number of entries received. All decisions made by BlogWorld are final. Void where prohibited.)

Brilliant Bloggers is a weekly series here at BlogWorld where we look at the best posts from around the web all surrounding a specific topic. Every week, we’ll feature three of the most brilliant bloggers out there, along with a huge list of more resources where you can learn about the topic. You can see more Brilliant Blogger posts or learn how to submit your link for an upcoming edition here.

This Week’s Topic: Starting a Podcast

Every week, BlogWorld’s fantastic podcast track leader, Cliff Ravenscraft, presents The Podcast Report right here on the BlogWorld blog. He covers tons of different podcasting topics, but today I wanted to do something a little different and give everyone a comprehensive list of links where you can find information about starting a podcast, even if you’ve never done this before. Lots of bloggers can benefit from having a podcast, but it can be daunting to get started. These brilliant bloggers (most of them podcasters themselves) have some great advice to help you join the podcasting ranks.

(I recommend you start with this podcasting beginner’s guide right here on the BlogWorld blog from Daniel Clark!)

Brilliant Blogger of the Week:

Learn How to Podcast by Cliff Ravenscraft

Cliff is a no-brainer as our brilliant blogger of the week. He might be a podcaster first and foremost, but he’s a force to be reckoned with in all forms of content creation, from podcasting to video creation to blogging. On his “learn how to podcast” page, you’ll find an AMAZING seven-part video series, wrapped up with an 8th Q&A video. This series teaches you absolutely everything you need to know about gettings started as a podcaster, even if you have no experience. His videos cover equipment, setting up and RSS feed, and more. You seriously can’t find a better all-in-one guide to getting started than Cliff’s resource, and his entire Podcast Answer Man site is something you’ll want to check out to learn more about podcasting. You can also follow Cliff on Twitter at @GSPN.

What’s the difference between an online community manager and a moderator? More cowbell.

At least, that’s the answer BlogWorld’s very own community manager Deb Ng gives in her new book Online Community Management for Dummies. Deb was nice enough to send me a copy to review, and at the end of this post, she even has a special giveaway for the BlogWorld community!

Online Community Management for Dummies is part of the best-selling Dummies guide series from Wiley. On the cover, Deb promises to teach readers how to:

Identify core tasks for community managers

Build and maintain positive relationships within your online community

Establish policies and transparency

Manager comments, respond to criticism, and evaluate ROI

I whole-heartedly think she fulfills these promises.

If you have blog, podcaster, business Facebook page, forum, video series, or any kind of other online content, you have a community – people who enjoy what you do and feel a sense of camaraderie about your online presence. A lot of people make the mistake of never engaging their community or even acknowledging their existence, but without these loyal people supporting your work online, you’re dead in the water. Deb’s book is all about how to interact online in a way that thanks your community for their support, builds your network of fans, and helps them thrive.

Online Community Management for Dummies is 314 pages split into the following parts:

Part I: The Basics of Online Community Management

Part II: Embracing the Community Manager’s Role

Part III: Building a Productive Online Community

Part IV: Growing Your Community

Part V: Assessing the Health of Your Community

Part VI: Taking Your Community Offline

Part VII: The Part of Tens (Ten Essential Community Manager Tasks, Ten Must-Have Skills for Community Managers, and Ten Best Practices of a Community Manager)

I like that this book is so encompassing and even covers the complexities surrounding specific types of communities, such as communities for children. The biggest negative, in my opinion, is that this is a Dummies book. I think Deb does a great job making the content interesting, but I personally tend to enjoy books that have less of a rigid structure and more personal stories about failures and successes. That said, if you’re new to community management, the structure of a Dummies book makes it easy to follow along and learn step-by-step, so don’t let this observation of mine deter you from picking up a copy.

I found the most helpful section of this book to be Chapter 7: Listening to Your Community. Writes Deb,

It’s one thing to watch and a whole other things to listen. During your rounds on the social networks, blogs, and community pages, pay attention to what people are saying. How many members are saying the same things? Members won’t come to you with every concern or request, but they may share ideas with one another. Pay attention to what they’re saying an take notes.

I think that’s where a lot of community managers fall short – they monitor, but don’t actually listen. Of course, this is not the only point of good advice in the book. Deb also makes a lot of stellar suggestions and observations such as:

Adding a community calender so members know what’s coming up

Rewarding loyalty with prizes and perks

Encouraging members to share rather than making it all about you

Using Google alerts to make sure you know what people are saying about you

Consider planning real-world meetups/tweetups

Avoiding the negativity trap

I could continue, but in all honestly, you should just pick up a copy yourself!

Or you could win a copy! That’s right, Deb has agreed to give away a copy of Online Community Management for Dummies to one lucky winner. To enter, simply leave a comment below responding to the following community challenge:

You write a blog post that goes viral and starts bringing in hundreds of comments. As readers weigh in with their opinion and reply to one another in the comments section of your blog post, you notice that one commenter continually makes negative remarks and calls other people names. He’s not just trolling, because he actually has insightful things to say about the topic, but his comments are increasingly rude and hurtful not just to you, but to other commenters. What do you do?

Leave a comment below by Friday, May 11, 2012 at 5 PM EST and one lucky winner will be drawn to receive a copy of Deb’s book!

Brilliant Bloggers is a bi-weekly series here at BlogWorld where we look at the best posts from around the web all surrounding a specific topic. Every week, we’ll feature three of the most brilliant bloggers out there, along with a huge list of more resources where you can learn about the topic. You can see more Brilliant Blogger posts or learn how to submit your link for an upcoming edition here.

This Week’s Topic: Facebook Likes

Whether you’re a small business owner or a blogger/podcaster, you probably already have a Facebook page. Maybe you’re highly interactive on that page and have a huge community there. Maybe you try to ignore it because you don’t know what to do with it. Most of us fall somewhere in between (though I think our community director Deb Ng does a FANTASTIC job on the BlogWorld Facebook page!)

On Facebook, it’s all about the likes. You want people to like your page so you appear in their stream, and you also want people to like individual pieces of content so you show up in their friends’ ticker. Today, our Brilliant Bloggers are talking about how to get more likes – and by making a few of the simple changes they talk about, you can skyrocket the success of your page.

Brilliant Blogger of the Week:

Buying Facebook Fans…Is There No GOOD Way? by Kirsten Wright

Buying likes on Facebook seems to go against my gut feelings of how to build a community, but in this post, Kirsten talks about an ethical and effective way to buy REAL fans through Facebook advertising. This isn’t the right move for everyone, but for many businesses, and even some bloggers and podcasters, “buying likes” is a great choice. From Kirsten’s post:

Facebook advertising, while it has a much catchier name, is technically still buying fans. But in this case, you’re buying extremely targeted, likely interested in your product/industry and often willing to engage fans. Which is where the key difference, and success, lies.

After checking out her entire post, you can follow Kirsten on Twitter at @kirstenwright.

This Week’s Topic: Retweeting

Retweets are a great way to spread your content well beyond your initial audience, so this is the topic I wanted to feature as today’s Brilliant Bloggers. How do you get more retweets? How can you track your retweets? How can you best retweet others?

These are all questions answered by the bloggers below!

Advice from Brilliant Bloggers:

The Science of Retweets by Dan Zarrella

This post from Dan Zarrella at Mashable isn’t light reading, but it is well worth your time. Well worth your time. In this post, he covers the four factors most likely to make a tweet go viral with retweets. Writes Dans,

ReTweeting is a rich source of data for this type of analysis: a larger number of ReTweets are posted every day, pertaining to nearly every imaginable topic and Twitter’s API gives us the ability to quantify and map viral behavior in a way that has never been possible before.

When I set out to answer the question of what makes certain Tweets more viral than others I found four factors that I believe have strong impacts on how far content spreads on Twitter.

After checking out this post on Mashable, you can read more from Dan on his blog, as well as follow him on Twitter @DanZarrella.

Twitter 101: 55 Tips to Get Retweeted on Twitter by Pam Moore

If you want quick tips, rather than the complete analysis that Dan has provided, Pam Moore’s post is for you. What works for one person will not necessarily work for another, depending on your Twitter audience, but Pam provides tons of tips in this post, so you can pick and choose those that work for you. From the post:

Retweets are good in that they help spread your message, can increase brand awareness, visits to your blog, and help you meet business and marketing objectives if you have properly integrated social media into your business.

Whatever your motivation may be to increase the retweet love, below are a few tips (55 of them) to increase those retweets. No promises. No guarantees. But heck, what do you have to lose?

You can find more from Pam on her blog and follow her on Twitter @pammktgnut.

How to Increase Your Retweets, Twitter Followers & Klout by Kristi Hines

Kristi’s advice is always pretty spot on, but I love this post about retweets (which also covers getting more followers and building your Klout score). It’s not a list of tips or an analysis like you’ll find with the above two posts, but rather a tutorial and other information about adding social media sharing buttons to your site. Writes Kristi,

It STILL amazes me every time I come across a blog that has no social sharing buttons. At the bare, bare minimum, you need a retweet button on your blog post pages. Why? Because if you don’t have one, you are missing out on a lot of retweets of your posts by your readers to their followers and as a result, a lot of traffic as well.

Kristi’s home blog is Kikolani, but you can also find her work on Social Media Examiner, KISSmetrics, and a number of other blogs. Follower her on Twitter @kikolani.

April is shaping up to be an awesome month for the BlogWorld community. We have lots planned, and hope you’ll set your calendars accordingly.

Here’s a look at what the members of the BlogWorld community can look forward to in April 2012.

Community Driven Content

BlogWorld is about content. Your content. Our conferences are dedicated to helping everyone who wants to create, distribute and monetize content so it only makes sense that your content is front and center on our social networking channels as well. This will be especially true on Facebook where we’ll be introducing ways for the BlogWorld community to highlight your content on our Timeline. This will go beyond our regular “brag your blog” days.

Look for the BlogWorld community to share photos for our Facebook Timeline cover and to share their BlogWorld-related content on our historical Timeline. We’re also going to have themed days where you’re welcome to share your blog posts, videos, photographs, or podcast that fit in with that theme. We won’t tolerate spamming, but we do want to highlight our community – and your content.

Also, our Facebook community is your community. We’d like to encourage everyone to visit our Facebook page and share your tips, questions and discussion topics in regard to content creation and social media on our wall. As long as you’re not spamming, you don’t have to wait for us to ask questions or share.

#BWEChat

We love our new day and time for #BWEChat, and the community is responding well. Hosted Thursday afternoons at 2:00 p.m EST, our weekly Twitter chats are a way to highlight our conference speakers. However, we know not everyone can attend. So #BWEChat is a way to preview scheduled topics and share with the community, even if you can’t make it to BlogWorld.

Here is what you can look forward to for #BWEChat in April:

April 5: Lauren Vargas will talk about her community manager toolbox

April 12: Ali Luke will talk about steps to take to edit your own writing.

April 19: Bob Dunn will discuss common mistakes to avoid when setting up a WordPress blog.

April 26: To be announced.

We hope to see you all there!

Google+ Hangout Educational Sessions

We see an amazing opportunity with Google+. We’re especially exciting about hangouts and exploring the possibilities. Our first Google+ event takes place on Monday, April 16th at 1:00 p.m. EST, when C.C. Chapman will give an interactive educational session about leveraging your online content to become a published author. This is our first Google+ hangout session, and if all goes well it won’t be our last. We’re also in contact with Google+ in hopes of making this a full fledged hangout on the air. In any event,we will record the session for those who can’t attend.

Your Participation is Important to Us

We recognize that community doesn’t mean a brand pontificating at a bunch of people. A community is a collaborative of people sharing together. We have someone (Yours Truly) here to guide community efforts, but it’s not my community and it’s not BlogWorld’s community, it’s your community and your participation is vital to our collective success. We want to hear from you and we want to learn from you and with you. We hope you’re enjoying our community programs and content and look forward to bringing you more ways to interact with us.

Here are the different ways you can participate within the BlogWorld community:
