BlogWorld & New Media Expo 2010

We just officially announced over the weekend at SXSW that our 2010 dates are October 14 – 16 and we are moving to Mandalay Bay Hotel & Convention Center!

I apologize for not getting the news out sooner but wanted to put up a quick post to let you know why it took so long, why we are moving and give you some other details.

First off this is a very big deal to move the show from the Las Vegas Convention Center to Mandalay Bay. I hope you can appreciate we had to keep this top secret until everything was finalized. Rumors suck and we didn’t want anyone to be confused about the dates or the location.

While we love the LVCC (our home for the last three years) we had outgrown the meeting space they had for us. Particularly for our keynotes and all of our community tracks (more on those in a bit).  If you have been to the show before you know the LVCC is massive (the 3rd largest convention center in the United States), but we took up every single meeting room next to our exhibit hall and actually had to build out our keynote area on the tradeshow floor. Exhibit halls are not known for their acoustics so this caused some problems with the audio particularly as we grew and it cost us a fortune to put down carpet, AV and a massive 20 foot high drape to divide the keynote area from the exhibit hall.

One other major factor was the location. The LVCC is in a great location for huge events like CES, SEMA and MAGIC, but for us it was inconvenient for our attendees. We couldn’t everyone into the Renaissance hotel which is a 2 minute walk from the South Hall where our show was located. So most people stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton. While it is directly adjacent to the North Hall of the LVCC thats about a mile long walk to where BlogWorld was! Like I said its a big convention center. So our community was spread out and obviously the community feel of the event is a very important thing.

At Mandalay Bay those problems are solved. We have a huge ballroom for our keynotes located right next to the exhibit hall, and all of the other meeting rooms for our breakouts and community tracks surrounding. Of course the convention center is attached to the Mandalay Bay Hotel (my wife’s favorite hotel in Vegas).  Mandalay Bay has over 3,300 rooms so everyone can stay there if they like and we were able to negotiate a killer deal for everyone. In large part because the management there sees the huge value of having 3,000 + bloggers, podcasters, and social media influencers staying there.

Whats the deal?

Rooms for $109 a night! That includes free WiFi in your room and of course free WiFi in the conference and exhibit area.  Those rooms will go on sale through our site in the next couple of weeks so stay tuned for that announcement. These are very nice rooms!

If $109 a night isn’t cheap enough for you, we will be announcing even lower rates at Luxor and Excaliber soon. Both of these hotels are connected to Mandalay Bay via a free monorail.  Oh and you high rollers can stay at the very quiet and very cool “The Hotel” which is directly connected to Mandalay Bay, or the even more posh Four Seasons; also directly connected.

A couple other quick items about the conference content. We will be hosting once again the Social Media Business Summit. This content is meant specifically for business owners and business executives to help them understand how to navigate the social media space, and how to use social media tools to build their business, communicate better with their customers and internally. Anyone who had been before knows we have a blockbuster line up of speakers who are offering real actionable business solutions.

We will have tracks on Monetization, Audio, Video, Advanced Podcasting, and New Media 101 for people just getting started with their blogs, podcasts, video and social networking.

Of course we will have community tracks, returning this year we have Sports, Travel, Health Care, Non-profit and Cause Marketing, Politics, Real Estate, Milblogging, Music & Entertainment.

And we have one new community track that everyone seems to be excited about; Food.

Oh and if you haven’t heard our opening Keynote will be Mr. Scott Stratten Author of the UnMarketing Blog, @Unmarketing on Twitter and author of the sure to be best selling upcoming book….. UnMarketing. Yes the man knows a thing or two about brand building =p.

What BlogWorld Looks for in a Speaker Proposal

Via Twitter, I noted the disappoitment in many bloggers and social media people (including me) when speaker proposals weren’t chosen for BlogWorld or SXSW. So I took it to the source. I reached out to the conference organizers who choose speakers for the various events including SXSW, IZEAFest, Web 2.0, and others to learn what they look for when choosing speaker proposals.

Today, Rick Calvert, the man behind the BlogWorld and New Media Expo, offers some insight into what the BlogWorld team looks for in a speaker proposal. .

Here are Rick’s tips:

“We look for several things in a speaker proposal. First is great relevant content for our attendees. We want our speakers to deliver information that people can really learn from and act on. Being original is a good thing but just being original for originality’s sake is not.”

In other words, thinking outside the box is always a good thing, but your idea has to appeal to enough people to fill a room. First, consider what attendees can learn from you, then consider whether or not attendees will really be interested in the subject matter.

BlogWorld is a blogging and social media event. Most attendees are there to advance their careers in these fields and to make a living as professional bloggers and/or social media people. Also, representatives from businesses attend BlogWorld to learn how to build community trust in the brand and create a web presence. How can you help? What is your expertise and how can you pass this on to others?

“We are looking for speakers who can deliver that content in an engaging way. If you have great content but attendees are falling asleep during your presentation then no one really benefits.”

Mumblers and monotones need not apply. Are you a confident speaker? It has to show through in your proposal, and, later, through your talk. There’s a reason conference organizers ask for the comment forms at the end of each session – speak with those forms in mind. You’re not at BlogWorld to pontificate. Attendees want to be engaged. They want to feel inspired and you want them to feel as if they’re ready to take action immediately upon exiting your talk.

“Then we want speakers who are going to put butts in the seats. They can do that several ways; great content attracts people. Well known speakers with a good reputation attract people.

Certain big names are a shoo-in at the various conferences because people attend specifically to hear them speak. Attendees know they will learn and receive value from this talk. However, you don’t need to be Chris Brogan to have an accepted proposal. Create awesome content, the kind that will pack a room and have them listening from the hallways.

“Finally where lots of speakers fall down is they don’t promote their appearance.Speaking at a conference is a huge opportunity to build your reputation and your business by giving your peers something they can really use. If no one knows you are there, then you just blew that opportunity and you are probably not going to be asked back or get a good recommendation from that organizer. Conference organizers certainly have a responsibility to promote their speakers but they have an entire event to represent. No one is going to promote your appearance as well as you can. Unfortunately at least 70% of speakers completely fail here.

Get on the horn, speakers. Rock your Facebook events and tell your Twitter followers. Announce your appearance in your regular newsletter and post it on your blog. The folks who follow you around the blogosphere may even follow you to BlogWorld.

“One more important thing to add is what we are not looking for and that’s people who are trying to sell something. If you pitch us a talk about how great your company or product is, then expect to get a “dear potential speaker” letter from us. People are always trying to get creative and trick us in to thinking that their sales pitch will be different, or that it really isn’t a pitch.

“No one wants to hear about your product from the stage. That’s what booths are for.”

Amen to that last part.

So here are your key takeaways:

  • BlogWorld will be open for speaker proposals at the end of February. There’s plenty of time for you to digest this information, take your time and write a propopsal that makes sense
  • Craft a unique proposal but not so unique no one will want to attend.
  • Don’t set up a proposal only to sell your crap.
  • BlogWorld wants speakers who can fill a room and justify a ticket to Vegas.

I can’t help but give a shout out here to someone that has given me inspiration in her work that she produces and the content she provides.  I am talking about Abby Johnson with WebProNews.  I first met Abby when she interviewed me following a presentation I gave at BlogWorld & New Media Expo on Blogging For A Living.  Abby was quick, professional and respectful of my time and turned the content around and followed up.  She is a consummate professional in our industry.

Abby gets to attend some cool conferences, but unfortunately she doesn’t get to be a spectator as she tends to work very hard.  I subscribed to her feed and love to see what she has next.

This video caught my eye because I thought it would be good to know that Sony, like Apple is getting into the application development world by making their dash thingy open sourced. Love the info Abby and keep up the god work. Perhaps you would let me interview you some time and turn the tables a bit? See you at BWE10!

What Is The Next Big Event?

Do you have an event, conference or meeting, besides of course our event which I just talked about, that you want us to know about?   CES was a huge event in Las Vegas last week, and our very own Rick Calvert and Patti Hosking was in attendance along with the reported 150,000 other people all wanting to see what the next cool thing was in consumer electronics.  We at BlogWorld & New Media Expo love to attnd these types of events and we plan to make sure we have someone that can make it to help promote our show and to also report on what we see in the industry and trends and news.  The problem is, it is tough for us to keep track of all of the events in our industry.

Mashable, RWW, TechCrunch and others all have calendars of events and we tend to keep our eyes on those lists to make sure we see all of the events that are reported in those industries, but event they don’t have a handle on all of them.  What I want to know is what are your events?  Are yopu running something that we shoudl attend?  Do you have a conference, or a show, or a trade event in an industry that doesn’t necessarily fit into the tech world or maybe it is on the fringe of social media, or other places you think we should know?  What about in other countries, are you planning on having a show in your city and in your country not in the United States?

With the number of categories our convention and trade show covers, with real estate, business, sports, military service, technology, monetization, politics, etc, etc.  What events are not being publicized that we should attend?  Leave a comment and URL here if you have an event we should notice.  I am also going to start compiling a list of events that are brought to our attention as we want to help you promote your event as much as our own.  If we can make a hub for people to come and find events in the new media world, we would love to help.

I think the next big thing that we may be attending is Affiliate Summit West again in Las Vegas.  Many of our friends and track leaders and speakers all attend that event on affiliate marketing.  Will we be seeing you there?

Three Days in Vegas – BlogWorld & New Media Expo 2010 When and Where

I am seeing a huge number of searches now that we are in the new year all looking for Blog World 2010.  People are searching I suppose to find out the details since we are about 10 months away from the event.  The other issue is probably related to the the fact that 150,000 people were geeking out in Las Vegas with each other and are looking forward to SXSW and Blog World Expo. We have not yet worked out the venue details at this time, but the show itself is going to take place on October 14-16, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  The first day of the show on October 14, 2010 is the Social Media Business Summit.   The final two days will be the trade show and convention featuring the exhibitors on the show floor.  Once the show venue is determined and those details are confirmed and completed we will be making that announcement.

Until then, feel free to get it on your calendar, and start making your initial plans. Once the other details are confirmed, we will be able to provide more precise information about hotels, parties and all the other fun that we have for three days in Vegas.  Three days in Vegas is either a great title for a Tarantino movie or perhaps my next blog post.

I am seeing a huge number of searches now that we are in the new year all looking for Blog World 2010.  People are searching I suppose to find out the details since we are about 10 months away from the event.  The other issue is probably related to the the fact that 150,000 people were geeking out in Las Vegas with each other and are looking forward to SXSW and Blog World Expo. Tag You're It! – Why Tagging Your Content Is Important

If I have said it once I have said it a thousand times, “We live in a Google world.”  It is true, we don’t order Chinese food, find directions to the store, or stalk old girlfriends without using Google.  Being findable in this world is important if you are trying to be found.  Businesses especially must pay attention to how their customers can find them.  Keywords and key phrases are how that is accomplished through the use of meta tags or just tags.

Tags are a keyword associated with content attached to it.  If you want people to read your latest blog post on how to wash a cat, you have to determine how they would look for that content and attach that key word or phrase to it.

The same rule applies to your content as a publisher whether it be a blog, a podcast, video or even your photos.  We often put pictures into our posts that we find which we feel are relevant to our content, the title or completely off the wall for that matter.  We find those pictures at places like flickr, istockphoto, and yes, Google image search.  We enter a keyword into the search function of those sites to find a picture for the content.

In addition to being searchable or findable, it also has the effect of increasing traffic to your content and makes the content watched, seen and readable.  One of the things that I do on a regular basis is to search out and find anyone that mentions BlogWorld & New Media Expo.  You can imagine all the different variations of that and the number of tags used to describe our event.  This is also why we like people that use a common tag.  The most used tag last year was of course “BWE09” and this year we are urging everyone to use “BWE10”.  This allows us a quick reference to your blog post, your picture on your photo sharing site, your podcast and your YouTube (owned of course by Google) or other videos. A YouTube search with “blog world” returns 234,000 results.  We all know it may be difficult for me to look at that many videos.  Using a tag like BWE10 focuses the searcher into your content. A similar search with BWE09 allows me the benefit of watching less that 150 videos.

If your content is well done and is something we need to share with our community, we find and share it.  This in turn increases the readers, listeners, or viewers of your content.  We are still pouring over the content generated as a result of the 2009 event in October, I am finding new content daily and still trying to read all of it.  As we grow and get bigger and have more content generated it is going to be tougher to find your content and thereby making it even more important for you to tag appropriately.

For the upcoming show in 2010 we are asking everyone to tag your content “BWE10”  If you Tweet that hashtag, put that in your post, attach it to your videos, photos and podcasts, I’ll be there to say hello.  If it is something that needs to be shared with the thousands of people in our community, we’ll do so and increase your traffic and readership.  If I miss something because I couldn’t find it, your content may never get discovered and broadcast further.  We are listening and we are paying attention to what is being said. If You Are A Blogger I Am Watching You

I was looking over the list of the bloggers to watch that was put together over at Darren Rowse’s blog at Problogger by Jade Craven.  The list is put together as a resource for bloggers to watch that can help others become better bloggers.  The list is great and I know of most of the bloggers there and will bookmark the remaining people that I am not familiar with for reading more in 2010.  I would love to have each of these bloggers provide a guest post here at BlogWorld & New Media Expo’s blog and I hope I get to meet them at the show this October.  After all, we are here to provide the best of the best of information about blogging.  The invitation is open to all of them to give us a post and provide our readers with their wisdom.

I read a large number of blogs.  I have more than a 1000 unread feeds that I keep track of in Google Reader, BlogLines and other places like FriendFeed, Twitter and Facebook to name only a few.  I try to keep my finger on the pulse of what is going on in the blogosphere, but posts like these are great to keep me apprised of who is blogging and what they are writing about.  I think I have been a subscriber of Darren’s blog now since Problogger was just beginning.  I knew then he was a great blogger and one to watch.  I am keeping my eye out and ear to the ground.
