I loved the ability to connect with other people who had similar interests, and some of the people I met on these forums are still people I’m friends with today, several years later. Although they receive less attention than social media platforms, forums are far from dead. In fact, if you have a thriving community, you could benefit from the addition of forums on your blog.

In my opinion, it’s why some popular blogs continue to stay popular, even if there is better content at other blogs. People love to be part of something. I think this post shares some really important experiences about managing an online forum from someone who’s been an admin at two very different kinds of forums. Not every “rule” out there is going to work for every forum, just like not every “rule” out there is going to work for every blog. However, despite differences, a forum is a forum is a forum. Starting a forum is a lot of work and the financial rewards come slowly and irregularly if at all. During the lean times, your passion is what will sustain you.     Great stuff for sure, but I had to kill my forums on the website because the glut of spam accounts got too difficult to maintain and there was hardly any interaction from real readers. Stuff like Facebook Pages for labels and bands themselves seems to have killed this angle for some. I honestly would have loved mine to work since I had a number of interesting areas to exchange thoughts and interests. Oh well, I guess this works for some and not others.

    • @piercingmetal Hm, I wonder if there are steps one can take as a forum admin to prevent spam (other than manually going through and deleting spam accounts). I do think Facebook Pages are a great alternative to forums, especially for brands, since it still gives people a place to talk, but it’s not quite the same level of interaction. We’d definitely love to read more about your forum experiences if you ever want to write a guest post for BlogWorld. :)
