25 Brilliant Bloggers Talk About Virtual Assistants

Author:

Brilliant Bloggers is a weekly series here at BlogWorld where we look at the best posts from around the web all surrounding a specific topic. Every week, we’ll feature three of the most brilliant bloggers out there, along with a huge link of more resources where you can learn about the topic. This Week’s Topic: Working with Virtual Assistants

As your blogging or social media business grows, you might find it harder and harder to keep up with tasks such as answering emails, formatting posts, and working with advertisers. By yourself, you’ll hit a ceiling – there are only so many hours in the day. However, if you want to open that ceiling and really find your true potential as a blogger, you can consider hiring a virtual assistant. Think of virtual assistants, or VAs as they are often called, as administrative assistants or personal assistants, but they don’t live near you – they do virtual tasks from wherever they may live. Let’s take a look at what some brilliant bloggers have to say about working with VAs.

Advice from Brilliant Bloggers:

How to Work with Virtual Assistants (3 Top Questions Answered!) by Chris Ducker

I had the pleasure of meeting Chris at BlogWorld 2010, and when it comes to running a virtual business, he really knows his stuff. His site has tons of information about using virtual assistants, and this post is a great place to get started – Chris answers the three questions he gets asked most often: What is the best way to train my virtual assistant? How do I keep my virtual assistant motivated and happy to work for me? How much do I pay my virtual assistant? I also highly recommend checking out the rest of his site, downloading his free ebook, and following him on Twitter @chriscducker. (Oh, and if you’re looking to hire a VA, he can definitely help you out!)

Why an Independent Contractor Agreement is Important by Nica Mandigma

As someone who works as a freelancer, I completely agree with Nica that having a contract is super important, so this post is a must-read. Nica’s site is a great resource for those of you who might be interested in working as a virtual assistant, and if you’re hiring, it gives you a unique perspective from the VA’s point of view, which helps you learn how to better hire and work with someone who is perfect for your business. Don’t forget to follow Nica on Twitter @busybee_VA.

50 Things a Virtual Assistant Can Do For Your Business by Maren Kate

I met Maren at BlogWorld 2010 around the same time I met Chris, and it’s easy to see why they’re friends – intelligent people with great ideas are often seen together! Maren can also help you hire a VA if you’re interested, but if you’re not sure that this route is right for you, check out her site, Escaping the 9 to 5…I bet she’ll change your mind. Maren is someone who gets an incredible amount of work done throughout the day, all by using VAs, and in the post I’ve highlighted here, she shows you exactly what a VA could do for you. After checking out her website, don’t forget to follow Maren on Twitter @marenkate.

Hi Alli! Those are some fantastic resources you listed — thanks!

However, as a professional in the virtual assistant industry, it is disheartening that you’ve highlighted someone who promotes outsourcing to $2/hour virtual assistants (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBxlqbKuDOw).

    • Owen McGab Enaohwo

Hi Hilary I understand your concern and at the end of the day it’s all about the value you deliver to your clients and if your services warrant a higher cost your clients will see it and pay you for it.

The reality is that the cost for hiring a VA varies depending on their skills and also where you hire them from. Due to the power of the US Dollar and also available technology entrepreneurs can now hire VAs from around the world.

My advice to any VA faced with this issue is to find a specific niche and become a big fish in a small pond, which will indeed justify the higher rates you get paid. Hence the more niched you get the better.

      • Hilary Brooks

Hi Owen! Thanks for your reply. While I’m not necessarily concerned about it from my own business perspective, the problem is that everyone suffers — not just some of the US-based VAs. The US is still losing more jobs than we are creating — and if money (from any industry) isn’t being put back into our economy, all businesses suffer because people (and potential clients) don’t have the money to spend. The cause and effect isn’t just related to the VA industry.

        • Allison Boyer

Food for thought: Some small businesses wouldn’t be able to get off the ground without the use or international VAs (or unpaid interns), and that would be bad for the US economy as well.

Also, maybe it makes me unpatriotic, but I’m more interested in a strong global economy than a strong US economy. This is definitely not my area of expertise (ewww numbers), but we live in a virtual world that doesn’t have borders.

It isn’t like a VA that can be hired in India, for example, never buys anything from a US company, just like you probably purchase things from non-US companies as well. The ripple effect of buying/selling doesn’t stop at US borders.

I honestly believe that business owners should do what makes the most sense to their business, whether than be hiring a VA that works for $2 per hour or hiring a VA that works for $50 per hour. There are pros and cons to each situation.

And for VAs out there – you’ll find clients willing to pay for you, no matter what your price, as long as you’re worth it. I’ve done VA work for people and I certainly change more than $2 per hour.

I just posted a guide to hiring a virtual assisstant for small business owners that summarizes many of the key issues/considerations small business owners should keep in mind before taking on a VA (based on my personal experience) and also includes a current list of 30+ resources for hiring an online assistant.

  • Stan_AM

We’ve come up with an even better way to utilize virtual assistants by breaking work down into specific digital tasks. You submit a task via a simple one click interface, and you get a hyper specialized provider assigned to it immediately. So for word files, it will be an MS Word expert, for graphics a Photoshop expert, and so on.  No hassle of hiring, interviews, timezones – Ziptask.com IS the freelancer. This way your VA is even more virtual and you are always using 100% of capacity on an as needed basis.  Check it out at http://www.ziptask.com – a brilliant idea for digital tasks.

  • Len Bowcott

A great post Allison, even though you were preaching to the choir in my case.

I’m a workforce of one, and there is no way I can get through all I need to do on a day to day basis without helping hands. I don’t want the responsibility of hiring people full time or even part time for what is a home based (more like cafe based) business, so I opted for a virtual assistant. Without a doubt, it was the best business decision I ever made.
